Nov. 28, 2009

John B. "Jack" Fugate, 81, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009, in Chula Vista, San Diego County, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frech and Maude Johnson Fugate, who were the founders of Down Home Motel and Restaurant in Rutledge, Tenn. He attended Tennessee Military Institute in Sweetwater, and the University of Tennessee, majoring in foreign language. He later attended Indiana University, where he earned his doctorate. He was fluent in seven languages: Russian, French, Spanish, German, Hebrew, Italian and Chinese. On several occasions, he served as interpreter for visiting Russian scientists and dignitaries visiting U.T. and Oak Ridge. At one time, he was an avid ham radio operator, and owned and operated an exotic animal farm called SORGENFREI in Athens. After the death of his mother, he moved to Villa Union Cia in central Mexico, where he resided for several years. Declining health problems prompted him to move to northern Mexico, south of San Diego County, near the United States for health care reasons. He entered into Rio Vista Health Care Center in Chula Vista several months ago. He was a member of Meridian Sun Lodge 50 F. & A.M. in Athens. Survivors include his first cousins, Sistie Bryan Jarnagin, Comfort Tate and Buddy Liner of Athens; and several distant cousins. A memorial service with Masonic Rites will be held at Rutledge Methodist Church, with the date and time to be announced when final arrangements are complete. Smith-Reagan Funeral Home of Rutledge is in charge of arrangements.
