Kenneth Burkhart (WA2WPA)

Ken was one of my elmers when I was first licensed. We were studying for the priesthood at St. Charles College in Catonsville Md. in the 1960's. He was a founding member of the radio club there. He gave me many opportunities to use his DX-40 and HQ-110 to get on the air when I didn't have any gear. If not for Ken I would not be a ham today. We both left the seminary in 1965. Ken joined the U.S. Air Force. He was tragically killed when the plane he was in crashed in England. I know this site is usually used to remember the recent SK's, but I think that those of our friends who passed before the Internet was even thought of should be remembered too. Frank, Your thoughts are appreciated. Ken was my uncle (my father's brother). He also inspired my brother and I to become amateur radio operators. I would love to hear any stories you might have as I was very young when he was killed. 73's...Best, Robert.

For Robert, I just recently came across a picture of your uncle Ken at the controls of WA2WPA/3 ca 1964. I will have it scanned in and posted here. Ken was an all around guy. He didn't just excel at radio. He was active in sports. A first rate student. He was president of his class. First class all the way. It was an honor to know him. 73 Frank AC3P

I was finally able to find a picture of Ken that I took about 1965. He is at the controls of the St. Charles College Radio Club station. Since the club did not have a callsign of it's own, Ken was using his own, WA2WPA/3.
