Paul Copeland (K4KCS/K2J)

It is with sadness that I must relate that Paul (Slim) Copeland has passed away Thursday 8/25/2011. Paul was an original 13 Colonies Special Event Operator representing the state of North Carolina KC4KCS/K2J. Paul was a very dedicated Colony operator and a joy to talk to. Our condolences to his family and may he rest in peace. He will be missed.

He was my best ham radio buddy, from back in Novice days in 1956. He was truly a great guy, and dedicated to the ham radio hobby. His last big effort was as K2J in the 13 Colonies Special Event for the last two years. He was a US Navy veteran and retired as a transmitter engineer from VoA. Slim was a big help to me with my amp and my antenna's,he was always will to help with his vast knowledge of ham radio. I considered Slim as one of my Elmer's. John, K4LSX probably knew him best as they talked almost everyday since the 1950's.

I was stationed with "Tiny" (as we knew him then!) at Pearl Harbor in the late sixties. He loaned me a camera to take to my only T.A.D. trip to Japan. Unfortunately the camera had been stored in Paul's grubby little station wagon that held a lot of his junk in it and had roaches the size of squirrels in it too and the shutter had molded shut and none of the pictures came out but we had a good laugh over it afterwords. A one of a kind good guy!
