Wayne Vollor (N4KDK (EX WA2AZZ))

November 24, 2002

Wayne (also known to some as Mike) passed away from colon and liver cancer. He was a very generous, talented, and warm person who has just about done it all in his lifetime. Although he spent the past 20+ years in Florida, before that he lived in upstate NY, mostly near Albany. He befriended many a ham operator attending RPI, where I and others got to know him, his wife, and two children. We all helped each other with ham radio projects - one that comes to mind is taking down his 40' tower and tribander that went up one side of the house he rented. It was hinged at the bottom so after unbolting it from the side of the house he and I walked it down until he realized he needed to prop it up. So he went off to grab his son to move the picnic table under the tower while I was slowly sinking under the weight! Another was the time we drilled his brand new VW roof to install a 2 m antenna, we measured it about 20 times before he got the nerve to actually drill. Many of us will never forget dinner at his house, chats on the air (both VHF and HF skeds), and his willingness to lend a hand. I last saw him 2 years ago when he came to Eastern MA to visit his cousin, he took the train to Boston where my wife and I met him for lunch on his way to the airport. He knew of his cancer back then and hung on far longer than anyone ever imagined, but that was his way. Now old friend, you can rest easy.

I often tell fellow hams that I took a novice test back in the early 80's. While looking through some memorabilia from my high school days today (1/29/13), I came across a certificate for the successful completion of a Novice course, dated 7-13-81 and signed by Wayne, WA2AZZ. His participation in the Brittonkill Central Schools Mentor Program served me well in the USAF and technical career. My heartfelt thanks goes out to Wayne, and I'm sure he would be proud to know that his guidance lead to my current General license. Thanks and Blessings to you Wayne!
