Guy Weitl (WB6HGJ)

6/26/2014

Guy was my mentor, and my elmer, and gave me my first license as a novice in the 70's.He made me take the code portion of the test 3 times before he would pass me. Now I teach a code class. He was a major part of the DX community in San Diego for many years, and is remembered fondly by members of the San Diego DX Club, and DX all over the world. WB6HGJ-GUY, you will be missed terribly. GUD DX es 73 my friend.

Guy was my 'Grandpa Elmer'... he taught my husband KB6PJU and when I came into Ham I looked to him for bright ideas. I'm so glad he was able to see both hubby and I earn our extras. He was special to both of us and now I hope he hears us call CQ from up there, I know he will be listening and laughing at the antics. Clear signals Grandpa!

Guy and I went to the mountains east of San Diego to avoid the city noise whenever we could make the trip. Inverted V beams, quads, verticals. 5000 feet and this night was 26 degrees. Out of the back of my camper, I listened to my elmer working everyone in the world on CW,and he knew 1/2 of them. Terry and I will miss you ,Guy-WB6HGJ.Hard thinking of you on Field day,my friend.Champagne Fist and Gold Heart.

Just saw Guy mentioned here and I hadn't heard of him in years, possibly fifty years. We contacted as novices in 1963 and perhaps several times more in '63 and '64. Haven't talked to him since but sorry to see he's left us. The novice bands were awesome back in the sixties and my best amateur radio memories are from then. Guy was one of them.
