Vardy Abernethy (W4VFK)

April 5, 2001

I discoverd amateur radio while visiting with him in Forest City, NC in May of 1961. He was my grandfathers brother. I had my Novice license (WN4CMW) in three months. He lived to be 102 years old. He enjoyed operating Army MARS. Over the years, I had had a chance to occasionlay meet him on the air and to talk with him in person. As a boy in the 1950s, I can remember his visit to our home in Rocky Mount, NC with his Gonset mobile radio gear (separate receiver and transmitter) and big antenna on the bumper of a 1950's black Buick. His later years were spent in Burlington, NC, near his oldest son, Paul N4ZTX. I will always be appreciative of the impact he made on my life and my career as a result of discovery amateur radio through him.
