Richard A. "Dick" Matheis (W0ICI)

April 8, 2015

Dick was a true gentleman, a wonderful, loyal and generous friend who lived life to the fullest. We had much fun together and, although we had a couple of unfinished ham radio projects, I am confident that we will have plenty of time for them eventually. He's just QRX for now. Terry, W0FM

Dick was very modest and wasn't quick to talk about his accomplishments and life experiences. However, Dick's family finally convinced him to write his account about his B-24 being shot down behind enemy lines during the war. Dick parachuted and survived, was captured by the enemy and held in a German POW camp for a year. Fortunately, Dick completed the book project a year ago and I was the proud recipient of an autographed copy of his book "Captured". Obviously, Dick was part of what Tom Brokaw has often described as "The Greatest Generation". W0FM

When I was the sales manager at R.L. Drake in the mid to late 70s, Dick opened a ham radio dealership in St. Louis and became one of our dealers. I visited him several times and enjoyed his company. He will be missed. Don, W8AD
