Denny Herman (N8ACF)

Dec. 21, 2014

Denny passed away from cancer the day after his 63rd birthday, having only enjoyed retirement for less than a year. He and a group of other hams went to Dayton every year since 1977. We had been getting multiple spots in the flea market for many years, and as a drag racer Denny was well prepared. He had a clandestine grill we used to cook food for many years and a propane infrared heater that we used in the canopy on those sleeting, freezing days when the hamfest was in April. People would walk past and come in just because they felt the heat radiating through the canopy opening. Whatever works. :-) In 2014 he brought his clunker motorhome that we parked in the spaces. Since I went down and back with him I paid for the gas there and back. It cost me about 50 cents a mile and four quarts of oil but it was fun. :-) And then in August his health fell apart and four months later he was gone. Please remember that tomorrow is promised to no one and do the things you want to while you're still able.

Ray, what a great tribute to a friend lost too soon. I have been an inside vendor at Dayton for a few years. I think I've been missing out on the fun! Cheers to you, Ray and his family
