14 OCT 1994

John was my best hamfriend ever and my daily sked partner for fun and very high speed practice. I helped him into HSC/DARC Germany and the SWEDISH HSC and he helped me into RAFARS. John served inthe RAF as a WOP, marrying a German girl who he met whilst serving in that country. Later he became a Civilian Morse instructor at various sites including RAF LOCKING. He once worked with TOM G8AX also S/K. John was a very accomplished all-round ham and made all his own keyers, ATUs etc and I have a TVI filter he made which I really treasure. I know many hams would tune in to our 4pm skeds on 40/80m each day, for the reading practice; we often worked in excess of 40wpm using electronic keyers(never computers or keyboards) and once or twice ventured to 70wpm but we could only manage callsigns and I am sure mine was QSD! John was very involved with RAFARS LOCKING at one time and held one of the club callsigns G8FC. John was not only a competent high speed morse operator, holding RAF HS certificates, but he was great on the elbug too and he was in fact teaching me to QSO with my VIBROPLEX LIGHTNING bugkey. He was an ideal teacher as he was completely honest and did not mind telling me I was QSD if I was, but he gave praise where praise was appropriate. My OM and I remember John with affection, it was a privilege to know him and for me it was a great privilege to call him MY FRIEND; I miss him dreadfully even now and have even gone off very fast morse, never having found another QRQ partner who could make me laugh too. John had a great sense of humour but his jokes were always decent and he was a Gentleman at all times. I hope to be able to add an image later from one of the many photos I have of John. I am sure many other hams remember John because he was a very friendly and popular ham. Rest Ye Well My Friend, from .- -. --. .. . --. --- .... --. .- ---.. ---..
