Estela Madrigal Crosier (KB0DUK)

December 9, 2000

Estela was a Police Officer for the State of Kansas who became introduced to amateur radio in 1987. She soon began studying and became a Tech Plus. She became interested in Red Cross work and severe weather spotting and was active with both pursuits, constantly using her radio. She often carried her ham HT while on duty also, frequently using that to give out travel information to travelers on I-70 and I-35 in the Kansas City area. She survived a normally fatal case of lieukemia (AMML) in 1982, received a bone marrow transplant from her brother, and returned to her work after a nine month illness. She raised four children: one a public utility foreman, one a graduate K-State school of business, one a student at Harvard and one in pre-med studies. Estela passed her general test in the spring of 2000, but had begun to have abdominal pains and never used her general ticket. She actually worked until October 5, 2000, but then became overcome with pain and went into the hospital for tests. A huge mass of cancer was found on her pancreas. She died at home December 9, 2000, surrounded by her parents, spouse, children and 11 siblings. Estela was elected the national officer-of-the- year by the Latino Peace Officers Association in 1989.

Estella was a great person, besides being a good ham. She was always there when needed, and would stay until she was no longer needed. Sadly, the disease got the better of her and she is and will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, and we know you are watching us and pointing us in the right direction when we need it. 73 Estella. de K0XM (ex-N0BIW) SK
