Great stuff!  Time owned: more than 12 months
After a few years off from ham radio I got back in about 4 years back and picked up a IC-746Pro which gave me many good tools for workin HF. That little rig did allot for a small footprint xcvr. Back in the 90ies I ran the 1000MP from my contest station which used the W2A call in many CQWW contest and recently picked up a used 1000MP(97 vintage)and it was like an old friend came back home. Added a pair of Inrad 2.1kc xtal filters in both IF's plus installed the roofing filter as well. Did the W8JI mod on the IF board for the NB and also the mod on the roofing filter board to lower the gain for better gain distribution between the IF's. All I can say is wow, on 40ty its like a knife with butter in slicing thew the BC qrm, set up the CO for a nice tailored response on both RXTX, wired up the 781pro mic and this rig just drives the snot outa my amp. For a older pre IF DSP rig it just sounds great and with the right filter it keeps up fine with the newer dsp rigs. Sure it would be nice to have a FT2K or pro3 but with the add on of the roofing filter it keeps up just fine with the newer rigs. Now its time to get into a new QTH and build another antenna farm. IMO this rig still holds its own in todays market and cost around $1k or so used, just great stuff!PS Ive owned 3 of these since 95...

No real reason to change  Time owned: more than 12 months
I keep looking at new rigs - the K3, FT2000, Omni VII, etc., but this is like my 1995 Camry. I just cannot justify changing. With the INRAD roofing filter and sharp INRAD SSB filters in the first IF, this rig just delivers. Yes, some of the numbers are not as good as the current rigs, and I am sure the Ten Tecs and K3 are quieter, but in terms of where I can get the biggest performance boost (a beam antenna?), this rig continues to perform and will stay put for some time.

It shares the desk with a TS-520s which is also a classic of its era.

A True Pleasure  Time owned: more than 12 months
I purchased my FT-1000MP new one month after it came out in 95/96. This radio is simply rock solid, loaded with good usable features and is a complete pleasure to use EVERYTIME I turn it on. If you spend the time to shape the transmit and receive features in the menu (by all means take the 15 minutes to do so), you will find some absolutely stunning performance only a few menu selections away. I LOVE the receiver in this radio and can fight QRM and QRN quite nicely with all the shaping this radio provides. Also, if you enjoy shaping your transmit audio, this radio will provide you with stunning on board flexability and results.

After 13 years, my FT-1000MP still looks, feels and acts like new. I have owned dozens of rigs but there is absolutely no reason for me to buy anything new...even 13 years later.

5 year's later - Still the best!!  Time owned: more than 12 months
In 2003 I bought my FT-1000MP used from Burghardt Amateur Center - South Dakota.
I'm 'load' the radio with all filters (and roofing) + we made the one W8JI mod. - noise blanker.

Two month ago I have idea to sell the FT1kMP and then upgrade to an FT-2000..
Hmm..but then have nice opportunity to visit OM and work Ctest with new FT2k.
The OC have FT1kMP and couple month old FT2k in his shack..so during the Ctest we have choice to swiching between two radio's.
So,after this test I decide the FT1kMP stay
in my shack + now I looking around (ebay..etc) for the second hand FT1kMP (like to try SO2R)

NO HARD FEELINGS (for all FT2k fan)..I like the design but the radio not convince me!

Sorry for my bad English but hope you understand what I mean.

Very Good Radio BUT...  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
First let me start by saying this is my first yaesu. I like it very much but comming from Icom rigs, I have to say that it is not any better than my Icom 751A or the 761 I had before this one. The radio has all the noise blanker mods done to it, it has the inrad roofing, 2.8 filters and 2.0 filters (I work mostly SSB). One thing I do not like about it compared to the Icoms is that it is a very complicated radio and you have to make many adjustments to obtain the same results that you get in the icom by just turning a knob. Very good looks but too many functions that aren't realy needed.
Would I buy it again? Well maybe....

A capable workhorse  Time owned: more than 12 months
I've had my MP for over ten years. It was an excellent and reliable performer. The W8JI mods, the INRAD roofing filter, and a couple of INRAD I/F filters, improved it considerably. It's not quite as good as my FT1000D, or my FT2000, but I have no complaints. I wouldn't give it a a full five rating..Four and a half is about right.

Great Radio  Time owned: more than 12 months
Have used my 1000mp for a few years and like its overall performance. I like all the analog functions and use them extensively. However, I do not like the A/D or D/A converters and therefore do not use the digital functions for receive.

The radio is configured with an ANC-4 (with a tuned external noise dipole) inline to keep the background noise level to zero. This helps a great deal in enhancing the sensitivity of the rig as the AGC keeps the RF gain at a maximum while tuning.

The radio is configured with all filters slots filled with SSB filters. Note that by using the USER function (with specific settings) one can defeat all the filter offsets when the 2.0, 500 and 250 slot locations are engaged. This enables the placement and use of any filter in any location.

Also have the TCXO-6 and IRAD roofing filter in place. A word of caution - the roofing filter makes the IF alignment absolutely critical. If the alignment had been a little off prior to placement of the roofing filter, the effect would not have been noticeable. However, insertion of the roofing filter under this condition would result in a truncated output signal. Note that this affects weak signals the most (intelligibility is lost). Even the strong signals will sound ‘bad’ (truncated spectrum). This can be checked by using WWV - and corrected by making a slight adjustment to the TCXO unit (assuming there is no major board level misalignment issue to begin with).

Regards to all.

I love it  Time owned: more than 12 months
I really love it. Simple to use: each function has a knob tu turn or a switch to push.Great reciver and very good audio. The DSP is good even if it was made some years ago. Before I've owned a TS850 and TS870 and I'm sure it's rally on another planet HI. I've made more than 4000 QSO, 90% in CW with optional 250Hz filetrs.

The only remark is about ATU... It's not so fast and it is not able to tune everythings... KNW ATU are always much better than yaesu.... Also in this Radio.

Nothing else to say, just buy an used one and try. You'll never sell it.

Excellent Rig  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have just got this radio, it was sold as defective and it was very, very cheap - 400€.
The internal powersupply is fried due to overvoltage, but that's it. Everything else is working perfect. It has all the optional filters and txco. All filter banks are filled.
I haven't decided yet, if I will have the internal powersupply replaced or repaired - it's working excellent with external DC voltage.
Before I bought it, it had never worked a single ssb qso, the previous owner worked only cw,the microphone had never been out of it's box. I love this rig and think I have made "the deal of the century"

Top of the line  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have had my MP for nearly 10 years and still enjoy the rig immensly. There are so many well written reviews before this one, that I cannot really ad much more. However.....

In the XMIT audio line I used to have several processing devices between the mic and the rig. One day I disconnected all the external stuff and ran my GoldLine directly to the rig. Nobody noticed any difference in my signals. So I now keep it very simple - no external processing.

For RX, I highly recommend a Sounds-So-Sweet speaker. This speaker allows me to hear the excellent signal reproduction the MP is capable of - better than any other speaker I have ever used (and I have tried many).

Last year I thought about getting a new rig. Instead I filled the filter slots and kept the MP. I have not been sorry. If I cannot clean up a signal, it was just not meant to be heard by humans.

I am thinking of a new rig for backup - but may well buy another MP. After-all, the MP is a known quantity that has a proven track record of excellence.
