A Swiss knife radio   Time owned: 0 to 3 months

De 1126

This is my latest and possibly last radio from these companies Tecsun Degen . It has been ordered from a quite known seller from China via ebay . The packet has been received in 2.5 weeks via registered email
This radio is much more than a radio It also works as radio / audio recorder , mp3 player and e-text reader for a price of $45 excluding posting (about $15 to Greece / Europe )
The package includes : Radio, earphones , a USB D type cable , a mains adaptor UK system , strip , a pocket guide and a BL-5C micro battery And a nice book style box that includes separately the radio form remain accessories . The seller added a mini Cd with a full line of guides from all the Degen models and all firmware versions
Its internal memory is 4GB The earphones included are of medium audio fidelity . I was expecting better earphones from Degen.
The battery included is a clone of Nokia BL-5C and separate batteries cost only $5 compared to $33 full price for original Nokia as found Amazon pages

IN a mini test I found the following results :
FM with good sensitivity and quite crisp FM audio (but somehow less than 1102 /1103) From settings you can change te band to Chinese Japanese American and World standards .
MW: Poor. Only the strongest signals can be heard. Steps are 9 or 10kHz preset from menu. From settings menu you can change the band range to 520 to max 1700
SW : Very 'sensitive' SW that reminds me the strong ACG from my PL200 .Very low signals can cause the radio to produce crack sounds. Nearly the same can happen with overloading (eg putting it close to an antenna ).
The frequency range is different from what is advertised . Ie you can only search inside the standard meter bands. IN the very few tests I made I have not fond a solution to listen outside the bands so far.
AM filter : Very selective filter supposedly quite below 4 kHz that offers bad audio

From menu there is a possibility to record to high and low bitrate . Just looking to the resulted files in your computer (by checking the date column in the file explorer ) you can see that the date stamp from the date the recording is saved ,
The lower bitrate is 40 kb (though supposed to be 96 kb) and 256 for the 128 kb recording . The 40 bk recording is OK for AM , and the 128 qw 256 which is OK for Fm . Recording has a high battery drain as in about 10 minutes the battery level has drawn by 1 bar from 4 bars of full charge (this is however imaginary as seconds after stopping recording the battery level has been restored)
During recording the audio level is preset meaning that you cannot adjust it while recording

There are 3 modes to record from microphone : high quality (Wav of 256 kb) low quality (40WAV of 40 kb) and a silence remover(256 wav)!
