good cans

I've had these for about 5 years and they have
survived drops to the floor and are none the
worse for wear. Sound good and are fairly comfortable. They are a bit pricey, but none
the less good headphones. I'm sure there are
more comfortable cans to be had though.

I have one set of these head phones I bought new in 1992 and they have held up perfectly! I use them almost every day and have no problems whatsoever.
The ear pads on mine have never fallen off.
I have another set that was 5 years old when I got them, and they too are flawless thus far.

High quality communications headphones

This things are built like a tank. If your rig has a hissy audio amp, you probably won't hear it through these due to the roll-off at 4khz. Most headphones these days are high impedance however these are rated at 8 ohms. Ironic since so many rigs have 100 ohm resistors in series with the headphone jack anyway. They do tend to compress the ear a bit since the pads don't go over the ear like larger headphones do. I find myself yanking them off in pain after about an hour. For QSK cw they are superior. Their reduced bass and treble response works to your advantage in cw mode because you tend not to hear the clicking and thumping sometimes associated with QSK. I wonder if there is a way to put larger pads on them? PS. I did use the Heil headset during field day and found them much more comfortable however I was not able to directly compare the sound. 73

Ear Pads Fall out

I have to give these phones only an "OK" - 100% due to having had to reach down and pick the %$#@*
earpiecs off of the floor half a dozen times already. Otherwise, electrically they seem fine.
I think Kenwood could do a better job making a better locking catch for the accessory earpieces.
I also feel that the fit could be improved using a sliding headband that would allow a more comfortable fit across the top of the head. Okay, I admit, I have a big head :=) They are a mite "snug" on my pumpkin.
Sorry to have to compound my original complaint but have to add the other day my HS-5's slid off of their resting place and struck a rug covered floor about maybe 39 inches below. I replaced them on the desk and later looked down and noticed one of the outer decorative grills had been dislodged from the outside of one side of the phones. Just another proof that the mechanical details are severely lacking. I've also had continuing problems with the padded earpieces coming out from their slots. I'm just before dropping some Super Glue on the prongs before I insert them the next time. They are very uncomfortable to wear for any period of time as I mentioned previously. No adjustment is possible for different head sizes as better headphones have. One size fits all.

Favorite Headphones

The HS-5 have been my fovorite headphones for many years. I have tried numerous others, but always end up using the HS-5. I just like the way they sound for communications work. My set of HS-5 came wired for mono. To take advantage of the audio capabilities of my new rig, I rewired the headphones for stereo. My HS-5 headphones have a three wire cord, so rewiring for stereo simply involved popping off the outside cap and changing the wiring. I found the service manual for the HS-5 on the Kenwood site, which showed the mechanical construction.

Excellent

Typical Kenwood quality and tuned for communications. Had mine for a year or so and use them only to dig out weak signals -- but nothing else compares (have tried four other sets of cans and none come close).

Best investment I've made in amateur radio recently!
They do have a little bit too much bass but I prefer it that way. A joy to wear and they cut out background noise in the shack.
(I'm not talking about the YL ;-) )

I like the HS-5 very much they are both comfortable and well made. They had to much bass for my ears but this was easily solved by installing a 1.0 mf cap in series inside the phone plug.

No dispute on whether these phones are good stuff or not, but be sure that your rig is designed for an 8 ohm load for the phones. Some in fact are designed for 32, in fact, any designed for low power I would imagine are 32 ohms.
My Elecraft K2 is a case in point.

Unlike stereo headphones which are often times used with HF rigs these Kenwood HS-5 headphones have the correct impedance (8 ohms) and frequency response (400-4000 hz)to really improve the intelligibility of communications audio. They come with foam earpieces installed and extra leather earpieces are included. Switching to the leather earpieces is easy and made all the difference. They totally block out outside sounds and really isolate your ears from anything but the audio from your rig. The phones are extremely comfortable. The 4K hz frequency cutoff is a great advantage over any of the stereo phones and gives great clarity to the received audio. I have tried many other phones and these are really the best I have ever listened to basically because they are tailored to the job at hand and are not 32 ohm 20Khz stereo phones. Worth every penny.
