what is wrong with adequate?
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

Not a fantastic rig & there are certainly better about, but this is a great cheap simple rig that I am happy to chuck in the car or a rucksack & I'm not precious about it. Yes I would much prefer an Elecraft K2 but that isnt a fair comparason. The multi-function switch is a bit flakey at times but not a major problem.
This is no status symbol but it is perfectly adequate at getting you on the bands... I'm not selling mine.

Very good, for what it is

I am rather shocked by the negative reviews which start this section. It's as though people are looking for sophistication in this rig.
I had one for quite some time, before I bought my FT-847. If all you need is to get on the air with SSB and CW, and you don't need one of these modern, do-everything rigs, then get one of these, second-hand.

This radio is a CB er's radio!
It's been out for quite a while now and has been superseeded by several far superior radios at less cost!
Do not bother!

Low end Unit!
|
Time owned: months
|
This radio needs updated to the new standards for radio equipment. I've been repairing radios for since 1967 and this radio is old school, big time.
It has several faults! The worst is the failure of the multifunction switch. The other is a fuse in the PA is a little light! The plastic used for the housing is of a quality that breaks easily compaired to today Nog-alon style cases.:)
I give this radio a low score as a radio for 2008. The CB market, is one reason I believe that is keeping this radio in the market place. Low learning curve for new hams.

Works for me, miss CAT

I am quite pleased with this TRX. Picked mine up at eBay for $425. Had to replace the rotary multi-function switch in the control head, but that was a relatively simple and inexpensive repair. The part only cost $11 (incl. S&H) from Alinco. Having acces to a decent de-soldering unit in an avionics repair shop was a great help though, hi.
I am primarily active with SSTV, Hell, and BPSK31 and this unit is more than adequate for all of that (never had any use for split-VFO,CTSS tones, and stuff, nor have ever met anyone who did to work serious DX on HF) .
Would LOVE to replace the control-head with CAT interface hardware. Has anyone figured out how to do that?

picked one up for a backup rig for the car, Very eazy to use really no need for a manual. i use it alot for 10M and PSK31. its a old design but seems to work, only draw back is CTSS is on bottom with DIP switches and Noise Blanker is Useless, otherwise you can work it hard will hold up to abuse.73 KF6GOM

Nice radio

I have had my DX-70TH for 11 years now and still use it today in my truck. I really enjoy the simplicity of this rig for mobile use. The rotary switch wend bad, but that was an easy fix. I also had a diode go bad and replaced it and it works good as new. My main reason for givig this radio a 4 is the PL tones are selected via dip switches on the bottom of the radio. My radio is mounted in a console so I can't get to them. Also the noise blanker is worthless. Overall it is a great rig.

great little rig

what a bargain! i picked this little radio up for $150can. previous owner only used on cw. the multi"malfunction" switch of course, was not working, and the unit was missing a couple front panel knobs. installed new multi switch/new knobs and it looks brand new! as far as performance, it works great. the if shift control has great range, and combined with the narrow filter, does an excellent job on close-in interference. the audio out, does seem "tinny", with the small internal speaker, but connected to a normal sized external speaker, it sounds great. i even use this unit on 80m in the evening, with a 170' centre fed dipole. also, i find keeping the speech processor in line, is a plus.
i mainly use this radio on 6m ssb, where i feel the receiver performance is the best. all in all, its a superb compact radio, that does not require constantly going into a menu system, to use the radio! just dial in the freq/mode, and go!
