A Great Key; A Great Person  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I have always wanted a Schurr Profi. My wife's cousin has one and I have seen them in pictures. Since they are so hard to come by now, I decided to take a look at the "next generation". I was not to be disappointed.

The Profi-M is very accurate. It can be set close and as light such that it feels like a touch key, as wide and loose such that if feels like a truck or any where in between. The adjustments are very fine and they stay put. The base is dense and won't move on your desk. Machining skills and fit are second to none. The magnetic tension adjustments are very nice and range from loose to having it actually 'click'. Perfect.

The materials are exceptional. You can have it made in several different materials. I chose the 'stone' base and polished brass with red finger pieces (of which Stefan threw in black and traditional clear at no extra charge!). You get the key ready to use with a cable and connector.

I personally met Stefan and his wife to pick up the key when I was in Germany. They are the nicest people you would want to meet. Stefan is very dedicated to his work and nothing but the best leaves his shop. He will work with you to understand exactly what you want made before he begins work. Each key is made to order.

I highly recommend the Profi-M. It is a Shurr design legacy that Stefan produces. You will not be disappointed.

Perfection  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
Keys made by Schurr have always been recognized as exceptional by nearly every ham for ages now, and in particular have become legendary since his passing a couple of years ago. He was a special, demanding, very accurate and stubborn kind of guy, having let Grimmeisen and then Scheunemann continue producing his famous key patterns after he went into semi-retirement. This leads to some confusion when discussing Schurr type keys when you see the same pattern key made by 3 different makers.

However, since his passing, the name Schurr is now continuing with his blessing and in fact his newest key is in full production: the Schurr Profi M (for magnetic). Schurr patented his key a few years back because he felt it was time to present something new, and he personally approved the high quality of their production by Stefan Bergsiek in Germany (www.bergsiek-morsetasten.de). Stefan is a very talented key maker with many ideas, and is currently producing the new Schurr ‘Profi M’ as well as a series of new keys under his own name.

Since I own several of Schurr’s keys, I was at first dubious if the new ‘Profi M’ could be so much better….Well I have to say that it really is another level up the already high ladder of Schurr’s work and ideas, with Stefan’s workmanship and execution a joy to use as well as look at.

The magnetic adjustment can be set with exceptionally fine variance and can be made comfortable for different styles of fist, whether super light or heavy, with wide spacing or next to nothing. It’s a pleasure to use and the sleek compact design looks fantastic too. Stefan produces them in various finishes and looks, so a stop at his site is worth a look. They are not cheap, but in my view worth every penny for their ‘Made in Germany’ quality and craftsmanship.
