Down for CPR  Time owned: more than 12 months
I don't mean to say negative things about a local retailer that has been a valuable resource, but RS is down for the count. The online store is only a listing, it says to "Contact Store" for prices and availability. I went to my not so local store, and it was a wireless phone store with Radio Shack still on the sign. What was still in the parts bin (not much) was old and shelf worn. All of the familiar faces were gone and the new store manager was ranting on the phone about having to fire all of the old staff and hire new ones that didn't know anything. I got depressed just being there. I have shopped at RS for 4 decades. Good bye old friend, you will be missed.

Better alternatives  Time owned: months
While I agree they have some stuff online, one selling point is that you can return stuff to a store. But they have a 30 day return policy.

Far better to go to Mouser or SparkFun; both have 90 day return policies and are far more accommodating. Much better sites as well, and easier to find what you're looking for or to browse around. RS is trying to get back to it's maker roots, but it's hopelessly lost its way.

Good Selection of Stuff  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I find shopping online instead of the RS stores to be more convienent. The only issue is you pay shipping and local sales tax, but that's the price of convienence.

RS pricing CAN be beat, so there aren't many bargins to be found.

They also have a much wider selection online than in the local store (at least my local area).

I've ordered several times and found the experience to be completely satisfactory.

Good selection of stuff, and easy to deal with.  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
Radio Shack's online store offers a much greater selection of parts than their stores, and is easy to deal with. Their Commercial Catalog is free in the stores. While their selection may not be as extensive as Digikey, Mouser, or Allied, they have most of the things we commonly use in construction projects. Tools, test equipment, books, kits and more are included. Pick up a Commercial Catalog at your local store and check them out.
