Smooth Key with light touch  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
The much anticipated ZN Ultimate arrived. The unit was carefully double boxed and arrived without damage. The base is very heavy - this puppy isn't going to be wandering around on the desk. Build / machine qualities are excellent, can't ask for anything better. The chrome plating is top shelf on the all the parts. While this key continues the family heritage of the first Vibroplex bugs with paddles mounted via trunnions in a bridge, the ZN uses ball bearings top and bottom to hold the rod for the paddle arm. On inspection one can see the bearings but they don't stand out and distract from the beauty of the device. The action is very smooth with no resistance (magnets dialed out) or movements except in the axis of rotation. With the magnets dialed back into position, they act in opposition, increasing in resistance as the paddle pressed towards the contact. As expected one can precisely adjust the distance of paddle travel as well as the force required. The fine screw adjustments should allow one to match the precise feel required. Locking nuts hold the adjustments. The ZN as received from Vibroplex had been obviously adjusted by someone who knows high speed CW because it was so precisely setup.

In usage it's super smooth, precise and the key has a solid feel about it. The swing arms are short and stout and hit large silver contacts which is why the key has the solid tactile feedback. I can honestly say I was able to crank up the keyer speed and this key enabled me to send faster CW (now have to work on the receive portion).

Vibroplex has a winner.
