I must agree with the other reviews. Although I have lots of new radios, I just love boatanchor receivers.
Following Ray's expertise with both the Hallicrafter SX-101A and my SX-117, these radios now perform on a level that is just flat astonishing!
Ray, is a GREAT guy and I have been fortunate that he has always responded to my rather mundane questions.
You just can't go wrong!!!

Just received my first issue, and wow, what a great little magazine! Home Brew, History, People, and lots of Classifieds, all bound up in a nice little booklet, well printed.
Subscribing to it was a pleasure, and Ray goes the extra mile to make you feel welcome.
I think this is going to be a valuable resource for me now that I own some Real Radios That Glow!

The Cat's Meow for Boat Anchor Owners!

This is the magazine to subscribe to if you have an interest in "vintage" ham radio gear. Many articles describe how to refurbish old gear and there are lots of historical anecdotes, old ads, homebrews, vintage nets, and photos to boot! I sent my grandfather (in-law) a gift subscription for Christmas and he loves it! I have been a subscriber for 3 years now and just ordered their hat, mug, and a current inrush limiter -- a device that is strongly recommended to protect your gear. Hope this review helps you -- FB & 73, Bart, N3GQ

Probably the most informative amateur radio magazine. Certainly the most interesting reading. Spend enjoyable hours perusing old issues also.
An absolute must for those interested in antique ham radio or AM.

I heard about Electric Radio while monitoring the 40 and 75 meter AM bands and was naturally curious about it. A few QSOs later, I had the address to send $5 for a sample copy. When it arrived, I was immediately impressed by the careful layout and overall production quality of the little periodical; later, it was the quality of the articles that impressed me. I subscribed. It's a niche product, but if you are interested in the history of radio (with an emphasis on ham radio), you can't afford to be without!

If you like boatanchors, then chances are you will LOVE Barry Wiseman's publication "Electric Radio". To date, this is the only U.S monthly periodical dedicated to those radios that "glow in the dark" (the other is "Radio Bygones", a British publication).
Now that the great days of the "tubular iron" have long gone, they are not forgotten. The pinnacle of the golden age of radio technology was celebrated with names like Hammarlund, Hallicrafters, Heathkit, National, Collins, and other famous makes. Many fine examples of old radio craftsmanship can be found in in vintage radio gear that still be had. Electric Radio provides the reader various articles and viewpoints of hams and other folks who have a deep interest in the subject of vacuum tube radios, associated equipment, and the culture that goes along with it. Not a dull month goes by when Barry puts fourth another issue of such a great rag. You find stories on radio restoration, radio product reviews, swap meet news, specialized gathering information (such as the Military Radio Collectors Group or the Collins Collector's Association meets), finds at the Dayton Hamfest, etc. At the rear of the magazine is a section devoted to want ads for vacuum tube radios and services that are an invaluable source of information for those who are looking for parts, equipment, and work for their radio restoration projects.
Again, I highly recommend this mag for your collection. Set aside a special bookshelf for all your copies of ER next to your favorite operating position. You can grab a copy of ER and enjoyably pass the time away while you're awaiting the ping of a carrier from the AM net control operator,

Electric Radio was here before the internet to provide a common venue so that boat anchor collectors, restorers, and dealers could interact with information on repairs, parts, and the resale of vintage equipment. More than that it has allowed many or us who grew up only knowing the names "Hallicrafters", "National","Collins", and the like, to relive those simpler times of youth in discussing equipment that we grew up with and/or could only dream of owning. The articles are excellent and its neat to look at the pictures of vintage shacks; I have written several articles and my shack was pictured in a past issue. I wouldn't have known about a commercially available product detector for my 51J-4 if it wasn't for ER; I did have an issue with a product that I bought thru an ER ad, wrote a letter reflecting same, and the editor chose not to publish it because he felt it was negative and I thought that was not right; that withstanding, such a minor disagreement does not overshadow all the positives that ER and its contributors and editors have done and continue to do to promote and cohere the boat-anchor hobbiest. Thank you for reading.
