Great performance on broadcast FM  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
The radio weighs over 60 lbs. Component layout makes it relatively easy to work on. Mine is an early version of S-36 with the front panel still marked S-27.

Gear driven tuning feels smooth. S-meter doubles as a tuning meter for accurate FM tuning.

While widely produced for the military during WWII, Hallicrafters clearly had the consumer in mind; tone control includes "High Fidelity" and "Bass Boost" settings.

I use it daily for listening to FM broadcasts and local aircraft traffic. It is paired with a three-way stereo speaker through an audio transformer. Sound quality rivals my modern Kenwood stereo.
