mods to ts-2000

Time owned: more than 12 months

great radio have done sats vhf,uhf ssb and hf on it. Qsk although relays is ok if use headphones.
I use with hiel goldline and get good audio reports. You can talior the audio quite abit with menus. I replaced the 10695 ssb filter with INRAD 8 pole filter. This mod makes quite a difference. I gets rid of alot of the "blow by" in cw and ssb modes. Digital filtering very good and can go down to 50hz and copy cw fine. As far as the "looks" are concerned it alot better than looking a toothless fat chick. hi hi

The Celebrity with Curves and Brains
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I got into amateur radio a few months before I bought this rig. It fits my technical needs well. How well it does that is extensively covered already here, and I'll simply say "ditto." So here's what I really like about the radio:
STYLE!
Our (my XYL is the lovely W8SDB) amateur radio station is integrated into the Library located on the balcony overlooking my Hearth and Foyer. Easily seen by guests, everything had to look good.
And the TS-2000 looks HOT. It's the celebrity model with CURVES!
Granted, if I had placed this radio in an isolated room or shack, I might not have appreciated the styling quite so much. Many hams find the good styling a bit strong, and make comments on the TS-2000 looks. But when the XYL allows me to place a radio in a very prominent location of our house, she should be proud to show it to her friends, even if they don't understand the nerdy brains under the hood.
SUMMARY: The TS-2000 is the hot babe with a snappy silhouette and an IQ of 160.
Price: I purchased my radio used from the original owner on eHam for $1150.

Drivers go bang
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

At the risk of sounding like some whining misfit with an axe to grind, the TS-2000 is superbly disappointing. I would be quite happy to see my life out with the TS-2000 except that it appears it will not itself survive beyond four years.
I received the excruciating news last week that it will be a month before parts arrive after it suddenly failed to TX on 70cm on all modes. I only got it back about two weeks prior after it stopped TXing on all HF and 2m bands on all modes. The shop replaced two driver transistors (2SC1972) and a blown fuse. It now appears we’re up for another round. Why? From the tidbits of information I am gleaning from around the net (no thanks to Kenwood in this regard – they remain deathly silent!) Kenwood have re-designed the affected area of the TS-2000. This is little consolation to me who is left with what appears to be a flawed and insufficiently tested and hurriedly produced lemon.
This radio was chosen to be the centrepiece of my shack. Everything revolves around it and the decision to purchase an approximately two and a half thousand dollar radio was not taken lightly. I already had a TS-570SG but decided, rather than buy a separate all mode 2m/70cm base radio, I would sell the 570 and get a TS-2000. When I got it, I was immediately appreciative of how Kenwood had brought many of the functions that were buried in the menus of the 570, out onto the control surface of the TS-2000. The 2000 is also a fantastic companion to Ham Radio Deluxe and the memory management via HRD is heaven sent. Operationally by itself, the TS-2000 is great except for the woeful, tiny numeric keypad buttons. For goodness sake, it’s an amateur transceiver not a mobile phone and the longer I look at my dead TS-2000, the more I wonder about all that wasted space.
Because the unit is out of warranty, I expect I will end up spending around 500 dollars having it repaired before I get rid of it, no doubt substantially out of pocket and hurting badly before I set about figuring out how I’m going to re-configure my station after having its heart ripped out.
The Kenwood TS-2000 is unique and hard to ignore for the price but I cannot tell you just how depressing it is when any part of it stops. If the re-design is true, buying a second hand unit will be very risky because you don’t want an early version. If you already own one and it hangs together, you’ll probably hang on to it because their re-sale value will be pffft.

May 29,2009 it arrived!and after being a Tech since 1987 I knew I would have to upgrade to get the most out of this Radio, so on Jun. 13,2009 I passed my test to General. WOW I can at last talk on frequencies I only listen on .Radios I owned ( Tempo 2020,Yaesu FT101, Drake R-4B & T4XC,Kenwood TS-680S and TS-520,They were used rigs. The Yaesu FT757GXll) was new and I liked that rig but the Kenwood TS-2000 has a lot of bells and whistle I trying to understand DSP Revive not like the later.Design is cool, ease of use is nice, all else will be understood in time for me. Thank you Kenwood , Keep up the good work!

Great for the Money

I have had a number of higher end radios for years and still do. Does the TS-2000 compare? No but then again, it wasn't designed to be a contest radio or a strictly VHF radio, or a dedicated radio when it was designed some 10 plus years ago.
Can it hear the DX? Yes. Can it work the DX? yes. Can it handle crowded band conditions? With some effort.
Keeping in mind, this is a "shack in one box" it won't do all things well but won't cost $10,000 either.
The versatility of the radio is well suited for the casual operator/DXer. If you want something stellar for contesting or really weak signal work, then either get a massive array or some very expensive feedlines and radios. Otherwise, it is the "jeep" of amateur radio.
I don't think anyone can go wrong with this radio. It is much like the older TS-830, or IC-765, generic in nature but with performance.
Not top of the line but was never designed as such.
Not the best "looking" radio but then again, there are ergonomic issues with some other 3-times the cost radios out there as well.
Don't like the looks, don't buy it. Want a spectral display with limited usefulness, buy an ICOM.
For the general amateur public, this is a great radio.

Fantastic!

I had a TS-2000 that I sold, big mistake! So I found a TS-2000X and I'm really satisfied with this transceiver, I use it on all bands, but mostly on VHF but you must add an external preamp in 144MHz, I added a LNA ATF54143 and I compared with the couple TS-850/Kuhne TR144H transverter that are near, the TS-2000 and preamp are identical, incredible I still do not come back, I added Inrad filter then the TS-2000 is untouchable!
I tried many different transceivers with all faults and qualities, but the TS-2000 is a universal fact that all these bands with a very good quality.

This is ten year old technology however it sure is a fantastic rig. It is often described as a "shack in the box". You can now find them just starting to drop a few pennies below $1000. I just fired up the skycommand mode and it sure is fun. No other rig on the market like it. Now for the negative. The directions for using skycommand are the worst. Badly written and it fails to tell you simple things like, the entire command system may not function if you dont reset the tnc, and a master reset of the ts2000 and th7dag does not reset the tnc. You need to use and understand hyperterminal for the th7 and hyperterminal or the arps 2000 software for the 2000.The instructions for resetting the tnc are atrocious at best and abysmal at worst. There are a few knowledgeable hams out there who can walk you through skycommand set up. Get on the kenwood ts2000 user group on Yahoo. The rig is a keeper. I really enjoy it however setting up skycommand was like suicide with toenail clippers..... slow and painful

Owned over two years. Remember this was the first DSP unit made. Over 9 year old design. Yes there are better transceivers out there. It is still one of the best in transmit audio. For the money, the best shack in the box equipment. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Still a great radio

I've had the TS2000 almost 5 months now, and I think it is a great radio. Before it I would say the highest high end radio I owned was a TS870S, if you can call those high end, and while the 2000 is a nice radio it is not a TS870. But look at what you get...
Coverage from 160 thru 440 all mode, built in TNC, basic yes but in there, DSP, satellite mode, sub-band receiver, and more. Yes it may be archaic and a little behind the times, but it is more than adequate for day to day fun. I hope the rumors are true and KW has a new HF radio ready for next year, but until then the TS2000 suits me just fine.
For the poster who called the radio ugly, if it is so ugly, why did you buy it?

I have had mt TS-2000 for couple months now. I really like the digital filters and autonotch -feature. I have previously owned IC706 & IC736 and this is the best radio I have ever had. Receive is good and speech processor is very effective.
