Hefty and rugged speaker mic  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I finally found it, a speaker mic that stands up to heavy duty use. After using the Yaesu speaker mic for a couple of years I was finding it hard to listen in noisy environments such as ARES or RACES support events. I came across OTTO Communications web site and inquired about a speaker mic for the Vertex (Commercial) line of radios, nothing was available. A year leater they manufactured a line of speaker mics, single speaker headsets and lighweight headsets designed for the Vertex, VX-10, VX-300, VX-400 and VXF-1 commercial HT's.

I made the choice to purchase the heavy duty speaker mic model V2-10106. What a difference over some of the amateur speaker mics on the market. The volume is loud and clear even in a crowded New York City street. The volume control flip switch is a nice convenience. The coiled cable is heavy-duty with strain reliefs at the spkr mic and plug end. The overmolded plug is the only drawback use to the weight of the cord. If you don't attach the cable to the antenna, the weight of the cable may cause the plug to slip out. A simple piece of double face velcro, wire tie, plastic "D" ring will hold the cable in place.

When transmitting I found out that one needs to move the V2 a few inches away from your mouth than with the Yaesu unit.

I would not suggest using this spkr mic with Yaesu's VX-1R it's just too hefty. The speaker is the same height but wider and thicker. The OTTO-Communications V2-L, Yaesu or others will be a better choice.

As far as the $82.00 price it's worth it for the quality.
