Simply Beautiful

Time owned: more than 12 months

This is my favorite radio. I have the chance to use a number of Military and Amateur HF radios in my job. But when I want to get on the ham band and try to find some one to talk to on the short waves then this is the one I go to.
This is a no frills, no bells, no menus radio. It doesn't do a lot of tricks in fact it only does one thing well. Make COMMO! Even an idiot like me can turn this radio on and get on the air without referring back to the manual or a cheat sheet.
I got this radio in 1995 right after I got back from the Haitian Vacation and I have never regretted it.
After 13 years the only problem is a balky Attenuator button.
If I could find one of these NIB I would get it.
This radio has been opened up for MARS and it was a simple do. A temporary jumper using a set of alligator clips and a reset is all it took.
I like this radio even better than the FRC-93

Excellent field radio

I have had my FT-840 since fall of 2004, with extra filters and the stable oscillator unit. I use it as a field radio on IOTA island expeditions. It has performed flawlessly. Each knob has one function and there are no menus to forget. I've made thousands of DX contacts all over the world on SSB and CW with this rig using a 12 volt battery, Butternut vertical and small auto tuner. The receiver is very sensitive and the noise blanker works. This is not a $4000 radio so don't compare it with one but for a field or starter radio, at the price you can pick one up for on EBAY, you won't go wrong with the FT-840.

My first and still in daily use

I bought this radio in 2002 knowing not much more than I liked the streamlined no nonsense appearance. The optional wide AM filter is a must the AM filter that comes stock is much too narrow. I also have the FC-800 remote antenna tuner which does a great job on transmit and receive. I added a IC-706mkIIg and a FT-900 to the shack but I have to say the FT840 is still my favorite. If it had the FT-900's notch filter it would be the perfect rig. I can do more with the FT-900 notch filter than I can with the DSP on the 706. Back to the FT-840, my transmit audio always gets raves and the receive audio is better than the other two radios as well. This is a simple no frills radio that gets the job done. If you're looking for bells and whistles this is not the radio for you. It's a very easy radio to take for granted, it just works!

Excellent Radio

I'm new at HF and the Yaesu FT-840 is my first HF rig. I bought the radio on ebay for $450 in like new condition. I am amazed at how well the radio has worked for me and how easy it is to operate. The only antenna I have used on it so far are home made inverted V's for 80, 40, and 20 meters. I have recieved QSL cards from several countries in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and almost every state in the U.S. using this little radio and many times they can't believe how well I get out with such a basic antenna and how good my audio is. I am positive I will be using this radio for many years to come!!!

VERY nice vintage Yaesu transceiver. It ain't a FTDX-9000D nor was it meant to be. I used an ICOM IC-720A station for a long time with the Yaesu sitting new in the box for just about the same time. Why, why, why? Should've tossed the ICOM a long time ago and used the FT-840. Far superior rig in virtually every way.

No issues

I bought one 8 years old from original owner.
Never had a problem. $260.00 cash, what a deal.
I have used it a year.
I have it hooked to a 102' MFJ G5RV flattop @35' and a TRUETALK G5RV in a "VEE" @ 48'.
This gives me a full 360 degrees. Longest contact to date is 8000 miles...satisfied?? YEP!!

Excellent Beginners Rig (good for field days too?)
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Two and a half years of use and this rig has not let me down, with the exception of a slight wiggle in the tuning knob - an easy fix reported in another review on this site.
The RX/TX is very good. As a result, despite limited filtering capabilities, long range contacts are easily possible providing the conditions and your antenna are good. With just a half-size G5RV antenna I have worked over 90 different countries, with 70 confirmed. Yes, with a large YAGI for 20M I could have done better, but that's not the rig's fault!
With its limited range of setting options, I think this could be a very good field day rig, getting around the problem of the operators changing the settings to suit themselves - there's almost nothing to change!!
The supplied hand mic is ok and has served me well though it is a good idea to get opinions on air as to which of the 2 settings you should use for best dx audio, number 2 was best for me. I recently treated myself to a Heil Proset Plus and this seems to work well with the rig.
For the beginner, there is nothing to confuse. Turn it on, listen, listen, listen, then TX...and you'll have lots of fun. The rig will not get in in the way as you find your feet on the bands!

Nice Radio
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
|
I have found that the FT-840 receiver is much more pleasant to listen to than the IC-718 I have since sold. I am pleased to find that the stock 2.4 kHz filter in the FT-840 is actually a quality crystal filter vs a cheap ceramic filter as found in the IC-718. I also like having real knobs on the front panel rather than making adjustments via menus. My only criticism is the first-character shortening which occurs on CW. There is always something!!
