Great HH & no latch issue after "quick fix"  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
This is a very sensitive 2m HH, and it's built like a steel brick. Battery life is better than others I've had using the same type. I did change the rubber duck for better performance. Menu is very easy to use. I had the battery latch problem until I tried a reviewer's "quick fix", and now the battery snaps in very tightly with much easier latching, and unlatching. It does seem the rubber seal is over-kill unless you're using the HH under water. I would recommend this HH to anyone who wants high quality and performance in a low priced radio.

Great Radio  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
I think its foolish to remove the rubber gasket around the battery. Be glad it is snug, use a dime to manipulate latch.

Quick Fix Battery Latch Problem  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Remove the rubber seal on the battery, and you will be able to latch, and unlatch the battery with your fingernail. It's a really nice 2m handheld, and I'm very happy with it...

Correction to my last review  Time owned: more than 12 months
Well, in my last review, I faulted the Vx-150 for only having a way to lock the keypad and not the tuning dial. As pointed out by another ham, you can lock both the keypad and the tuning dial by hitting the function key + the #6 lock key, which engages the lock feature. However, you have to go into the menu and assign what controls you want locked out when you engage the lock feature. I had mistakenly only added the keypad to the list. SO, this can be taken off of the annoyances list in my review. Thanks, -Ken

Great radio  Time owned: months
In response to the previous post about not being able to lock the tuning dial. Function button and # 6 (Lock) does it for me....as per the instruction book.

I have had t for about 4 years and they have been great radios....worked many local public service special events. Order extra battery cases and use NiMH batteries, or use a power cord adapter and connect to a battery pack with D cells. (5000 Mha)

I love this hand-held.  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I love this hand-held. It's super simple to use and works great for local repeater access. The price was right for it as well plus a free spare battery too. Could not ask for a better 5 watt 2 meter hand-held transceiver. My only complaint is the need for a SMA adapter to hook up to most 2 meter antennas other then the original rubber duck that comes with it.

Solid as a brick!  Time owned: more than 12 months
The VX-150 is not the smallest, lightest, most powerful or even prettiest radio on the market; but it has to be one of the most rugged. My VX-150 is about 4 years old and has been dropped, rained on, thrown in the car and buried in a rucksac. It still keeps going. I think that it was one the best purchases I ever made and is excellent value for money.

I think that one of its most useful features is that it will run on AA batteries, with the optional battery tray. You are not trapped into using a custom Li battery. It will charge/run directly from the car (or other 12V supply) and it will deliver a useful 5W.

Of all the radios I have, it is the cheap and cheerful VX-150 I would trust my life to.

It really is excellent value!

Battery Latch, etc...  Time owned: more than 12 months
I'm very happy with my VX-150. The current HRO promotion to get the VX-150 with TWO free batteries is a great deal. The VX-150 has a great receiver, sufficient stock antenna, and is very durable. The stock batteries, although only 700mW, appear to last a reasonable amount of time. My radio did not come with charging instructions for the battery - I typically leave my radio on the charger overnight (~12 hours). I like having the display on the top of the radio instead of the front - it makes reading the display while the radio is on my belt or in a cup holder in my car very easy.

The battery latch is a bit of a bugger. Best way I've found to get it open is to stick a small coin (penny, dime, etc) in the slot between the latch and the body of the radio and twist the coin, freeing the latch with ease. Using no tools I'm afraid I'll rip a fingernail off. For me this isn't a big deal as I'm usually not too far from some pocket change.

The thing that gets me (and the reason for my "4" rating) is the 4-pin speaker/mic connector that Yaesu used. First, it's a terrible design because if your speaker mic pulls out of the socket approximately 1/8" of an inch, the radio gets stuck in transmit. Second, a guy about has to put in a special order at Mouser to get the 4-pin connector, or pay ~$15 for the CT-44 adaptor. Any other radio - Icom, Radio Shack, Alinco, Kenwood - uses connectors that are readily available at Radio Shack should you wish to wire your radio up for packet, aprs, etc. Yaesu SERIOUSLY needs to reconsider the use of that dumb 4-pin connector and go with something that is mechanically stronger, does not lock the radio in transmit, and is not so difficult to find.

Overall, for ~$110 with 3 batteries the radio is a deal that's hard to beat. Even with the couple of nuisances mentioned above I'm left feeling I got my money's worth.

Dan / ab0re
