Works, however cheaply built  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Works, however lots of issues
Installation and configuration was not easy, it came with no instructions or software. After 6+ hours of using Google searches and YouTube videos, trail and error of different software packages, I was finally able to find a software and configuration to get it working. (SDRSarp).

The receiver front end over loads with intermod when connected to high gain outside antennas. When connected to inside low gain antennas, the reception is very limited to only strong signals.

All in all, its not a very good receiver. Its a toy.

excellent!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
don't know why this item is listed as 'not in production,' because at the time of this writing (062717) it is! and what a bargain! as a former Ten-Tec RX-320 owner, i always bemoaned the limitations of the receiver... but with this dongle (at less than a tenth of the RX-320), the sky is literally the limit

i checked out the dongle under GNU/Linux (Ubuntu) and Mac OS X 10.10.5 - using the cross-platform gqrx client - installation under GNU/Linux required adding some software repositories before installation - under OS X, you simply copy the app to your Applications folder - couldn't be simpler!

at first i was a little stumped due to the interface, but after the initial dialog (the dongle and other settings should be automatically set up for you), i didn't realize all you had to do - for the most part - was click the 'play' button in the upper left of the client window to start reception

the V3 of this dongle also offers HF ranges, obviating the need to purchase an RF upconverter (at least for my needs); all you do is add:

direct_samp=2 to the device string entry in the initial I/O Device Settings dialog

remove the string and restart the app to go back to higher frequency use (i tried doing it on the fly with gqrx, but the app didn't like it)

the possibilities are limited only by your imagination: network stream the signals, use the unit as a panadapter in the shack, hook up to Alexa ('Alexa, what aircraft is that?'), quickly find the best band conditions, and so on...

as always, it's best to have a good antenna available for your needs - i *highly* recommend a Comet HS05 (or HS10) - you'll save stress on the dongle's SMA connector

also, don't use this dongle near any transmitter - not a good idea!

overall, the best little radio trinket i've purchased in a long time!

Good value for $20.  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have 6 or 7 of these dongles, from the black generic one using the R820T chip, the generic blue with the R820T2 chip, the RTL-Blog v2, and the RTL-blog v3.

My main use for them are HF, and ADS-B monitoring.

For ADS-B, the cheapest $9 variety is good enough. For HF, the RTL-Blog v3 is great. For an additional $10, you get a metal case, TCXO, Bias-Tee, HF direct sampling mode (Q Branch), and SMA antenna port.

For best performance on HF, an upconverter may be better than using the Q branch mode. I have used both the NooElec and the SpyVerter. The SpyVerter being better performance, and cost wise, in my opinion.

Depending where you live, and the use you give it, a filter may be needed. In my case, I use a filter for ADS-B, and a MW block filter for HF (also from RTL-Blog). Others may also need an FM block filter.

Does it compare to an Elad or Perseus? Of course not, and neither does it cost as much.

The dongle alone is a fantastic platform to become familiar with SDR. Great free software is available to 'drive' it.

And if you are a ham, it may be used as a panadapter for your transceiver.

Very Good HF For $20  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I bought one of the RTL-SDR version 3 'dongles' about 10 days ago. This is my first foray into the SDR world. I got it primarily to see how it would work on HF compared to my FT450D. The SDR is connected to a 40 year old Hygain trap vertical and the FT450D is connected to a 40-20-10-6 OCF antenna up about 20 feet. In doing A-B comparisons, the FT450D wins but the margin of difference is remarkably little. The SDR can hear everything the FT450D can but sometimes a little weaker. Of course the antennas are different .. so this is anything but a scientific test. I am using a BCB block filter ahead of the SDR. Works well as a spectrum monitor for the FT450D. I have not explored the VHF and up world all that much yet. My bottom line: For about $20 the RTL-SDR V3 (the V3 is important) is a very inexpensive, yet good performing intro to the technology.

ok but not very sensitive  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I own many of the cheap rtlsdr tv dongles, along with several upconverters and a couple factory built combo's. I thought the rtl-sdr blog with the new (r820t2) chip and other improvements would be a step up from the cheap $6 internet dongles. I found it to be less sensitive across the band than the cheap ones. Looking up some other reviews on this dongle I found this it typical.

Pros: Nice aluminum case, sma connector, 2
telescoping antennas and a base with 3'
cable, I use them on by HT, works great
for tx 2m and 440.

Cons: Less gain than cheaper tv dongles, not
as sensitive as the blue plastic dongle
which also has the new r280t2 chip and
is in same price range
