Works FB  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
For function and build, I would have to give it a 5. It was so easy to tune my 10 your old daughter could do it. The old tubes were tired, but I still got 500w out of what is a 600w rated amp. Audio was clean, it easily interfaced with my Icom 718 with nothing more than an RCA patch cable. I did not use QSK with CW but CW did work fine.

Bought mine for $250, and sold it later for the same $250. Solid built, attractive unit. A true shame Dentron is no longer in business.

Many reviews on the Internet are biased for too critical. Sure, this is not a modern amp, and true it uses sweep tubes... but at the time it was designed and built it was modern. My review is based on function, fit and finish.

Gi7bt FB mod!  Time owned: more than 12 months
I said I'd post again once I got the modifications completed. WOW! What a peachy little amplifier, 350W from 20W drive on 20m
In the UK 6LQ6's are up to £60/$120 each! the Gi7bt $25 inc shipping from the Ukraine, no contest. There are more details of the mod on my website www.qsl.net/m5txj
I'm one happy bunny!

Dentron GLA 1000 Amplifier  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
I've had my GLA 1000 about 6 mo. now. I am very pleased, it gives 500W CW output with 100W drive from my Heathkit HW100. It came with 4 good tubes. I got it through Ebay for $200. A good buy, I think. Looking to the future, I started shopping for spare tubes on Ebay, and learning about the tubes that are suitable for this amp. I have learned that 6je6, 6je6a, 6je6b, 6je6c, 6lq6, 6me6, 6mj6, are all OK for it. Also, "MATCHED SET" tubes are not needed, despite what the tube merchants tell us. Tubes that check close to the same on a tube tester work well together. You just don't want to mix some weak tubes and strong tubes. As an experiment, I installed a 6je6, a 6je6a, and two 6lq6's, all different brands and got the same 500W output. The tubes checked equally strong on a tube tester. I have purchased 12 spare tubes so far from Ebay, the average price being $6.75. Most of the tubes were 6lq6's. So I think one of these GLA 1000's is the most bang for the buck in small amplifiers, the performance is on a par with the Ameritron AL811 and costs much less. As far as conversions to other tubes, I think there are probably as many 6lq6 type tubes in the world right now as there are EL509's, so why do the conversion. Besides the sellers of EL509's want the same price as a premium set of 6lq6's anyway! I think the conversion to GI7B tubes is a great idea if you want to do that, I don't know if it is worth the cost of having the conversion done by a specialist, that money will buy a lot of 6lq6's
or 6je6's. So if you have one of these amps or are thinking of getting one, go to Ebay and find some spare tubes for the future and then the future of your GLA 1000 will look great!

Wolf in sheeps clothing  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
This is the second GLA-1000 I have owned. I performed the GI-7B conversion on it and I am Very Pleased to say the least. The conversion info on the web is outstanding.
I found a high volume fan that is super quiet that provides the finishing touch.
600 watts output with 60 watts drive is nice for an amp I have less than $200 invested. Besides the enjoyment doing the conversion.
I'll be enjoying this amp for years to come.

GLA-1000  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I am very happy with my GLA-1000.
It is a simple little desk top amp that runs on 110 that gets the job done. Mine is on its second set of tubes in 20+ years and easily puts out 500 Watts PEP. There is an easy mod to replace the tubes with EL509s incase these sweep tubes get too expenisve.
The amp doesn't have a tuned input - but since my exciter has a built in antenna tuner- I just use that. Some other reviews have said it is hard to tune and has a loud fan. I don't find either of those things to be true of mine. If you see this amp for under $300.00 I would buy it. If it is over $300.00 - you may be able to buy more amp for your money with other models.

GLA-1000 conversion with 2 × GI7B  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
Converted with 2 × GI7B (or 4 × PL519)puts out about 400-500 W on peaks with minor mods of the original schematic, see http://www.xs4all.nl/~pa0fri

Dentron GLA-1000 GI-7BT Conversion  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
This conversion amp by N8GPQ is great. It is a carefully thought out conversion that looks clean and works great. There is a website that shows pictures of how the conversion is done and there are circuit boards available for the new caps and voltage doubler. I am completely satisfied with mine. I drive mine with about 40 watts and the cabinet hardly gets warm. This tube has a high gain. Make sure you don't overdrive it.

Dont convert it  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
Dont do the converstion, contary to what some here think, if you do it, you end up and have to modify the rf board, by dropping it ever so slightly, or they wont fit inside the case, and by doing so, the bottom of the tubes dont get cooled by the fan!! And you WILL end up cracking them.... If you do the mod, get GE 6kg6a's.. they are not as tall, and they are as tough as the russian tubes, and will put out the same amount of power.....

Nice Little Amp!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I purchased my GLA-1000 at a hamfest in October for $200. The fellow had LOTS of amps and radio gear, and wasn't concerned with sqeezing every dime out of the older stuff. The amp was 10 cosmetically and the seller said that he "upgraded" the finals. I haven't opened the hood to see exactly what he did, but the amp does have two tubes, so maybe just a new set of 6's? Anyway, it took just a few minutes to connect it to my Yaesu 920 and tune it up. I expected 300-500 W output on peaks, I am seeing (confirmed with several different swr/pwr meters) typically, 500-1000 W out, depending on the band.
Now, when I operate, I'm using my amp about 50% of the time. It runs VERY cool and appears to produce no spatter or spurs. This is my first amp and I have to say I must have stumbled on one that somebody spent some extra TLC on. If you find one for sale that's clean and operational, you'll have a pretty good little amp that makes a nice addition to the HF station.

GLA-1000B Conversions Work Great  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have done numerous conversions on the GLA-1000 amps and they all work great. Rebuilding an amp is not only fun but educational and you don't need to have previous technical experience to do this. There are also numerous websites on this and hams who are more than willing to help out. The GLA-1000 is a great amp with a small footprint, easy to convert, and reliable. Tubes and parts are found easily on the internet.
