i got this radio 11 months ago and i must say, WHAT A WONDERFUL RADIO ! ! ! 6 and 2 meters are a plus. i have 2 other hf rigs but the ic-746 is and will be my primary hf rig. very user friendly, produces quality audio and receive is wonderful. working distant stations on cw using just a g5rv is such a pleasure. if only i had extra money i would get another one for my 15 yr old son who just upgraded to general.

I bought mine gently used and had it for a month and the internal tuner quit. I sent to Burghardts and they fixed it. Now 3 years later the tuner quit on 160 80 and 40 meters again. Oh well, I got a MFJ manual tuner so the rig can agree with my Swan amp that does not have tuned input. The radio itself is great and sounds superb on the air. The main reason i bought it was to have a rig that worked on 2 and 6 meters SSB and CW.

Owned my ic-746 about 1,5 year, get it from a friend that used it abt 7 years without troubles!
It's a good performer,superb at-tuner exc....
Big difference after installing all filters ssb-cw.
The only thing I dislike is the compression control on the back ! but it's a keeper !!! and much better than my HONKY-TONK IC-7400 that I'have already sold !!!

8 years later

Time owned: more than 12 months

Got my 746 new from HRO almost 8 years ago to the date of this review. Since then, I installed a couple 9 MHz filters and the high stability crystal, and updated to a SM-20 microphone. No problems with the tuner or lights going out reported from my side, and still performs like the day I took it out of the box. What I see from some reviews are nitpicks on features that the radio was not supposed to have in the first place.
Would I change this radio for something else? NO WAY!!! The $1200 I paid have been a good investment. No service calls, no problems.

Decided to give my Yaesu 101zd a slight rest so bought a secondhand IC-746 boxed as new. Now with the added bonus of 6mtrs and 2mtrs. my first contact complimented me on the quality of my modulation, this using just the standard mike. The more i use this radio, the more I love it, its a superb piece of kit, one to keep.

Great all round radio

I absolutely adored my FT920 and considered it to be the best radio i had owned. However i needed an HF radio that i could take with me on my yacht and the FT 920 was just too big!!!
I stumbled upon an advert for the icom 746 and after much consideration reluctantly sold my 920 and bought the Ic 746.
First impression was it looked very smart and modern, large enough to use but not as large as my ft 1000 or 920. My immediate concerns were wether it would receive as well as my FT 920 and at first i had doubts about this.
However after a week of use i have discovered that my 746 receives just as well as my FT 920 did and in difficult conditions it actually receives a little better with regards to the clarity of the signal you are trying to receive.
The radio is straight forward and easy to use with good reports from all contacts. I did have a report that my audio could be louder but in honesty i talk quietly and had the same problem with the 920 and had to use a HEIL microphone to cure this on the 920 so it is NOT a radio fault!!
On HF it receives and transmits very well. Two metres FM seems to work very well. The received signal strength reading is not as strong as the signals received on my ft 847 but the quality is the same and occassionally clearer. I dont think the radio is deaf on two metres FM it just gives a different meter reading to my other radios but hears the signal the same!! I can certainly work everything i used to work and still open and use FM repeaters over a hundred miles away !!!!
Bad points are few,
firstly i think the microphone (HM 36) looks cheap compared to the actual radio and looks like it belongs on an older transceiver.
Secondly the RF/Sql control drives me mad!!! surely a radio of this caliber can have seperate RF gain and squelch controls.
These bad points do not however affect what is ocverall a fantastic radio. They are down to personal taste more than anything.
Overall i am very happy with my 746 and find it has even re kindled my enthusiasm for radio.
I would say it is on equal terms with my old FT 920, maybe a little clearer on weak HF signals but lots better than my FT 847.

Great Value with Effective Twin PBT
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I have had my 746 for over two years now, having purchased it on eBay from a ham who took very good care of it. Since owning it, I have installed the following filters:
9 Mhz--FL-100 (500 Hz) and FL-223 (1.9 KHz)
455 KHz--FL-222 (1.8 KHz)
My usual narrow filter selections are SSB: 9M 1.9 KHz, 455K 2.4 KHz, and if the going gets rough, I kick in the 455K 1.8 KHz filter. For CW I use the 500 Hz filter at 9M and the 1.8 KHz filter at 455K. However, what really make the difference is the Twin Passband Tuning. It is the best interference fighter I have ever used. It is much more effective than IF Shift on my other rig-an FT-920.
I keep thinking I would like to get the 746PRO, but so far cannot see how the extra $$ would be an improvement over my 746.

Perfect radio!

Time owned: more than 12 months

All I can say - it is great radio, especially for its price. Bought it used and slightly modified on eBay to use a separate antenna for receive, such as beverage. Worked surprisingly good even for my quite hard contesting being my only rig in the shack. The receiver worked great(I bought it with 2 INRAD filters installed on both IFs for 400Hz CW). I am quite active on RTTY contests too, so these CW narrow filters worked great for the RTTY too. Had more noise on SSB mode, especially in contests, but that's because of lack of any special SSB filter. All in all I can say - perfect rig for it's price! I sold it only because I got a very fine proposal for it and was thinking about rig with digitally variable filters. But, as soon it will be possible, I will buy another one ot these "small black boxes" to put it here on the shelf as a backup radio.
