A great crystal controlled receiver with many uses  Time owned: more than 12 months
I built my R1 over ten years ago & it is still going strong. It wasn't a difficult kit & the instructions were very good. Once built, the tune-up was very easy & W1AW blasted into the headphones making for nice copy with just a wire antenna. The receive can be slightly tuned around the crystal frequency if needed. There is also a SSB filter kit available to make the R1 a nice monitor for your favorite net or chat frequency. I haven't tried this option but plan to in the future. Its supplied with the W1AW frequency crystal depending on which band you choose. Instructions also come with ideas for a VFO. Though it is rock bound, I think it performs much better then the varactor control receivers that I have built from other kit suppliers, both in selectivity & sensitivity.
