Great antenna!
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I have only owned this antenna for a couple weeks, and just got around to using it a couple days ago. I simply rolled it out on the floor (NOT the best conditions ever), plugged the twinlead into some coax, connected it to my LDG Z-100 autotuner, and... immediately broke through a pileup from Texas to Honduras with 25 watts out on 20 meters! I will write a more complete review once I've had more experience with this antenna, but at least at first glance, this seems to be an excellent and well-built antenna (especially for only $35 plus shipping).
Forgot to mention... I have the G5RV Junior 51' version.

All G5RVs are not the same

I finally got around to putting up this Antenna that I had purchased from A & M back in January. The antenna it replaced (at least for now) was a home brew Windom 80, which worked very well. I beleive there are a few reasons that G5RV antennas get a bad rap in general. One is all are not constructed the same way and this antenna is well made and very simple. The other reason is the way the antenna is installed, especially height...it needs to be up at least 45 feet and the vertical needs to hang straight down. After installing this antenna, I got many reports of very loud signals from all over. I also had two local hams order the same antenna after hearing how it worked. If you are looking for a multi-band antenna (tuner required) and have the space to put it up, this one is hard to beat.

NOT BAD AT ALL!

Well I must say this antenna works MUCH better than I would EVER had guessed.I only use it for 75 & 40 meters & it does NOT let me down.It does NOT compare with my Mosley TA-53M on 10-20 meters but does OK on those bands should an emergency arise. The antenna is VERY WELL put together & I think it will last a VERY long time. For the money tough to beat WIDE BAND coverage with a tuner! }:>)

Great Bang for the Buck

I have the 1/2 size G5RV (40m-6m) and for the money it is a great antenna. I have it 30-35 ft. above the ground slug between two trees. Get decent signal reports with the contacts made. I hear them and can talk to them. Great first antenna.

G5RV TRUE-TALK-I
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

The G5RV antenna by WA2NAN is well built and works. I set up a portable station in PA for two weeks and made contacts in Europe and Africa on 20 meters running 100 watts with the antenna 20 feet high. It was used to make contacts on all bands using a tuner. The True-Talk-I will be set up at my home QTH in Alaska. I am thinking about purchasing the 6-160 meter version for a remote cabin in Alaska. I won't be building anymore dipoles. Thank you Kerry for a great multi-band antenna.

Update of my March 2005 review. Have now had the half size in service for over a year. Up 18 feet, that's all. Is my main antenna. Got a LDG Pro100 tuner also, and with that, I can use it on all bands 6-75m. It works very fine on 20/40/75. I have a bunch of other wire and vertical antennas and do lots of A/B comparisons. It's always as good as the others. Did a comparison with a guy in Atlanta (I'm near Seattle) between my 10 meter vertical and the G5RV; he couldn't tell the difference. Same radio; same band conditions. a true A/B test. I'm a G5RV man!

204 ft is twice as nice
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months

This is an update to my March 18 review. The 204 ft. model is unbelievable. Yesterday 6 meters opened up for my first try on this band and I was talkimg to Texas with only 50 watts from northwest Indiana! Then broke through a pile up down in palm Bay Florida! This antenna tunes all the bands with my LDG PRO100 tuner. It tunes 160 meters as fast as 6 meters
This is only a $50 antenna, what more could you ask for.

Good but.......

I have had this antenna for a little over 3 months. First antenna up at new QTH. I received the same email message as W7DDD but was lucky enough to receive the antenna a few days later, also packaged the same as his. Didn't hurt the antenna any. While it preforms admirably from 6-40 (I have the 51 f'ter)my doublet I put up consistantly kicks it's butt at least in receive. (STILL only a tech) Build quality was very good and the weather here in upstate NY hasn't bothered it a bit. Good, easy antenna to throw up in a pinch.

Delivered as promised...excellent performer!

I bought the G5RV last September and didn't get it up until the weather finally cooperated last weekend. My 8 year old son helped me get it setup and located about 40 feet in the air suspended from a few Ponderosa pines in the backyard. Ran 100 feet of coax to the shack and got right on the air. The antenna is well constructed, easy to handle and fairly light weight. It tunes up quickly on all bands as advertised and will (reluctantly) tune up on 160 meters. This antenna is an excellent listener on all bands, quiet and sensitive. I receive very good signal reports on all QSO's. I received the antenna in just two weeks as promised. I live in a city neighborhood and the full size (102') fit easily in an inverted V configuration. The Antennas & More G5RV proved to be the perfect antenna for my situation. I am very pleased and would recommend this antenna highly--especially if you can only get one antenna setup due to space or neighborhood constraints.
