Top notch for RTTY and PSK31
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I have been a Winwarbler user for several years, I note the info here is quite old...so I thought I would add an update.
If you are looking for FREE software that is easy to set up, and performs very well..this is it. The software is very well designed and the support via help files and a yahoo user's group, is superb.
The author has decided to concentrate on PSK31, PSK63 , and RTTY rather than extend the software in to covering some of the "obscure" digital modes. Since well over 95% of the digital modes you will find on the bands are PSK or RTTY, this will suit most hams.
The software easily connects with almost any radio capable of CAT control. There are may extra features for Icom and Kenwood users, possibly other brands too. Winwarbler integrates with a suite of other applications and the one called Commander is the one that does lots of interesting things to control your rig in conjunction with Winwarbler.
There is a basic log feature and some contest support . If you want full logging features, use the companion DX Keeper, the best logging software in the world . I often use Winwarbler in RTTY contests as a preference over fancy contest sofware, because i like the way Winwarbler does RTTY (with use of the MMTTY "engine" ).
I really like the ability to have several receiving window panes open, you can copy and work multiple signals . The "stations heard" feature is extremely useful. You can decode and log (to a file) all the stations you are receiving in PSK mode, their frequency , and even their signal strength. This is ALL stations within the pass band of you radio. A very useful feature.
Have you ever seen software where you think "Hmmm, I wonder what this function does" ? Well, Winwarbler (and other software in the DX Lab suite) is WAY better than any other ham software for explaining things via little mouse-over pop-ups of text that explain everything. I mean everything, I wish more authors would take the time to program in such detail.
Winwarbler alone is a superb application, use it with its companion logging program , DX Keeper, and you have a great combination. Use the two with Commander and Spotcollector (also part of DX Lab) and you'll have all you need for DXing and digital mode QSOs.
I should point out that this is "award winning" software. While that may sound a little grandiose, it is actually true. The author recently received an ARRL award , The ARRL Technical Innovation Award. The award was for Winwarbler and the other parts of DX Lab. In granting the award, the ARRL said "His DXLab suite consists of eight programs that cover every aspect of station operation. Bernstein goes beyond simply supporting DXLab; he mentors users in other aspects of programming and Amateur Radio".
The download of Winwarbler takes but a few seconds, try it and you will be having fun in a few seconds.

Unique Features
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
Although I've only been using WinWarbler for less than 1 week, I will rate it a 5 due to some unique and very useful features I have not seen in any similar SW package.
PSK31:
Although other similar programs can simultaneously monitor and decode PSK transmissions across the band, WinWarbler is the only one I found that can extract callsigns (Source and Destination) signal quality, and capturing text for rapid acquisition and QSO initiation. The 2 windows I keep opened all the time are the "Stations Heard" window and the "Channel Monitor" window. The "Stations Heard" window allows you to see a history of recently heard stations (you define the 'age' time in minutes), freq, channel #, sig quality, strength and who the station is communicating with. The "Channel Monitor" window provides realtime info of much of the above. It would be nice if the Channel Monitor offered more flexibility - for example to sort not only by age or callsign, and to have a timestamp on each call along with the ability to save as a text file.
RTTY:
I haven't played with it yet, but the ability to send and decode RTTY signals from two sources
simultaneously (diversity decoding - sound card and external modem) sounds very cool.
Thanks again for another great freeware product.

Solid Program
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
I have used several programs for PSK to include HamScope and Digipan. At first I was convinced that Hamscope was the better product, but after spending a couple of months with WW, I rarely use HamScope anymore. In fact, once Dave Bernstein adds CW to WinWarbler, I will delete HamScope from my computer.
In short...good program that does PSK and RTTY quite well.

Great free Digital Modes PSK31 and RTTY
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
This program integrates with the other DXLAB suite of programs. It provides sound card PSK and RTTY modes. It does this very well and is full featured.
It does lack other modes and has only 2 banks of macros.
It provides full radio control if used with Commander.
