GREAT  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have been using it with my FT-1000D and TS-775DSP and it works great. I will probably upgrade to the Plus because of its features. The Proset rides my head fine and I get superb audio reports for the few SSB contact (using both the HC-4 and HC-5 elements) I make (I mostly hang out in the CW portions of the bands). In addition, the headphones are quite comfortable even during contests.

Price too high for the quality  Time owned: more than 12 months
The headphones are very fragile. The microphone is ok. What about the cable? I think a telephone cord is better. I had to change the cable because of the hum noise which was a problem with some FT-1000MP owners. They look like they made in China, and I think they are!

They fall off when logging!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
This headset is OK, but it starts to fall off my head when I look down at the keyboard for logging! Not so good for contesting!!!!

Not very good  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
Bought the Heil Proset for use with my 847. The recieving on the headphones was very quiet indeed. Had to turn the radio up full to hear the audio and then it was very distorted. Very poor performance and taken the whole lot back today for a refund!

Lives up to the expectations of Heil  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
After having used a pair of hi-fi headphones for a while I decided to purchase a "proper" headset and finally decided to go for the Heil Pro-set with the HC-5 insert - I already use a Silver Eagle mike with a HC-5 so I know how this insert should perform.

The mike? - Performs outstandingly as expected with excellent reports from listeners, although this insert is for normal use rather than DX, it still cuts through the noise on S1-S3 reports.

The headphones? - Lives up to the Heil expectation. Comfortable to wear even for hours at a time, and very good sound quality too. The phase switch really does make a difference on the hard to hear signals.

The downside? - nothing really except in my opinion, the cable could be a little heavier as it's very similar to the cable used on cheap "walkman" stlye personal stereos.

To consider? - A longer cable and/or extension cable could be useful, I have my radio to the right of me, the cable goes to the left earpiece so that means the cable has to lie across the desk or my lap. I've made up an extension cable so I can run the cable around the back of the desk out of the way.

On air reports are good but !!!!!  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
I have the Pro-Set IC and so far all the on air reports I have received say that my audio is very good. The reason for only giving this headset a 2 is that the sound I get from the headset is not always good. If someone has a wide signal the headset distorts very badly and the only way I can clear it up is switch in a narrow filter on the rig. Also if someone is a little of frequency it also distorts very badly. I have two other headsets I also use just for listening and I have no problems at all with either of them. Some of the other things I don't like about the Pro-Set is the straight cable going to the rig. This should have been coiled. I am always getting it tangled up in my feet whenever I cross my legs. Another very important feature that should be added is a volume control knob on one of the ear pieces. What a pain when your sitting back in the easy chair during a QSO and you have to lean ahead to adjust the volume on the rig. Both my other 2 headset have volume control on the ear piece as well as coiled cables. If Bob would implement these 2 additional features along with clearing up the distortion problems I think he would have a winner.

It works!  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I borrowed one for the first time during Field Day 2005 and it worked so well I bought one meself!!

Consistently received stellar audio reports on transmit. On receive, audio was ok in earphones, not outstanding.

A Boon for the Contester/Dx'er  Time owned: 6 to 12 months
I've owned my ProSet (with the HC4 element) for about 9 months or so having purchased it a few days before CQWW '04. For the past 15 +/- years I had been using a Heil BM-10 with the HC4 element. Overall, I have been very pleased with the BM-10, but never found it comfortable for prolonged CW contesting or DX'ing & instead would switch to a set of AKG K240 studio headphones.

Out of the box, I could see I was not going to regret the purchase. The first thing I noticed about the ProSet was how well constructed it was, especially the adapter for my FT-990 (purchased separately). The older BM-10 came pre-wired with the the microphone wires in heat-shrink tubing before terminating (loosely, with minimal strain relief) in the mic plug. Now, the adapter has molded strain relief and is a modular job...so it's a matter of simply switching adapters as you change rigs.

The ProSet is as comfortable if not more so than the AKG 'phones, hugging your head with enough pressure to block out outside noise (amp, computer, etc.) but not too much to be uncomfortable.

Where the ProSet really shines is in the Phase Reversal switch which changes how signals "appear" in your head. Switched "in", signals sound spread out. Switched "out", signals sound centered in your head. Not only is listening fatigue reduced (especially when contesting), but during a pileup the "spreading out" effect helps in picking out the weaker DX signal (this was especially useful during the FT5XO expedition, when signal strength varied minute by minute).

Audio reports have been consistently positive. The HC4 element gives you that extra punch....provided you correctly adjust your mic gain and/or speech processor.

At $135 (+ $20 for the adapters), the ProSet may seem a bit steep. But spend several hours contesting or DX'ing with them & you'll be happy you spent the money.
