Second VX7 is a winner!

R and L Electronics replaced my first VX7 in record time and the second one works great!
Seems one of the few bugs the VX7 has is a PLL problem that happens in only a few units....I just happened to get one.
Have had a lot of Ht's and this one beats em all!
Best receive....great transmit! Easy to use too!

A great radio

The vx-7r is a great radio, however spend the time and READ the manual, I use mine daily and for hunting hits the repeater fine-to-ok good power and size I like most of yaesu radios like cars and truck sometimes you get a lemon dont like baro unit, easy to program after you spend the time to read the manual, I replaced my vx-2r with this vx-7, have the vx-5 and vx-170-vx 177
these ht are good soild performers

bad broadcast FM front end

This radio is very good except for one thing: The broadcast FM front-end easily overloads if you are near a broadcast tower. I wish they would give it some more dynamic range. This is especially true if you connect a better antenna to the radio, such as a roof-top mobile.

I love this HT. I am new to the hobby and have not been around all that long but I took the time to research my purchase and this radio seemed like a very good deal. It has been able to do anything I have asked of it and then some. I listen to all the local repeaters on 2M and 440. Hardly ever use 220 and I am building a J-Pole to give 6M a try. There are some good 6M repeaters around. I drag it everywhere with me. I take it to work and listen to one of my favorite repeaters till 11AM when the news comes on. ( I have all the local TV and radio stations programed along with some local scanner stations including my VFD. ) Then I listen to the news on channel 13 and after the new I listen to Friends. Then I switch back to the local repeater and my VFD in dual band mode till I go home. When I go home I turn it back on and participate in the local nets then chat. I turn it off between midnight and 2AM or whenever I go to sleep.
Trust me it gets allot of use each day and I have never had a problem. The battery can last between 1 and 2 days depending on the usage. I have almost all the accessories for it including the charging stand. The charger works awesome too. Some people stated that they had problems with the charger but I have had nothing yet and don't expect to. I live so close to the repeater that the rubber duck works just fine for me but sometime I need to get that far away transmission and hook it up to a mag-mount dual band antenna on my AC unit and it does make a big difference. I think I have a very good system with this radio.
The only thing I do not like about it is the water proofing. It has a bit of a muffling sound on the internal mic. When I have time I just use my external mic and there is no problem.
One more dislike is that the temp. sensor is inside a sealed unit and thus cant give you the true outside temp. Try talking for a long time and see how it heats up :-)
Read the manual and see it has allot of easter eggs in it such as Weather, Shortwave and Marine frequencies preprogrammed in for you.
I cant speak from experiences with other HTs or base stations but I can tell you that this HT is one good unit!
As I stated "It does everything I want it to do and then some !"
I highly recommend this HT for its reliability, size, battery usage and features based on my experiences with the Yaesu VX-7R.
I got the black. It looks good and has not scratched yet.
I hope this review helps someone with there purchase.

Never had the PLL Unlock problem with either of our VX-7R's, and also never had any other problems with them in the few years of owning them. The '7R is a solid radio that performs well and is one of the best HT's I have ever used. I occasionally use an extended-length antenna for longer range coverage, but normally the included duck works OK (such as they are).

Stinks so far....!!!

Bought a Yaesu VX7 Silver and the Programming software the day before yesterday Sat 20 Sept 2008 at R&L Electronics in Hamilton Ohio....Got home late and charged it overnight and turned it on Sunday morning 21 Sept 2008 for the first time.....Monitored a bit and made one repeater contact for 5 minutes and the PLL unlocked...Blinking diplay...No receive! Reset it 6 times to no avail!...Did some web research and its a VX7 common problem...unlocked PLL!
It's now monday 22 Sept 2008 9:45 AM and the radio was dropped off at UPS for a trip back to R&L to trade for another. 10.70$ shipping with 400$ Insurance!
I'll let Ya know how that goes!~ How long that takes to get replaced!
Will R&L replace it fast???...Will the new radio work flawlessly? Tune in and find out!

Pros:
Good solid HT. Waterproof, ruggedly built and compact. Menu system took time to get to grips with. Excellent RX and TX on 2m and 70cm. 6m functionality a bit limited and antenna extension in this situation gets in the way.
Cons:
Takes an age to charge. Dual band use lousy IMHO as I constantly get problems with what Yaesu call "image frequencies" to the extent that I nearly sent the unit back as faulty. Useless belt clip. SU-1 Barometric unit a waste of money, as is external microphone. Poor 6m functionality and antenna extension for this results in antenna getting in the way, sticking in side or on one occasion up my left nostril. Ouch.
Excellent TX and RX though make this a good handheld.

Great HT

I bought mine used, got a great deal and it works perfectly. The only problem is what someone else wrote about the belt clip. Mine also has come loose and I've replaced the screw but the new screw has come loose again so I just use the belt clip only if I have to. I don't use the 220 or six meter. I have big radios for six and I have a Kenwood THF6A for 220. The Kenwood puts out 5 watts on all bands including 220. On the Vx7r 220 is only in milliwatts and unless your using a repeater it sucks. But for the 2/440 side the radio is perfect. I've purchased a different antenna because the stock is for everything and I dont need an everything antenna. Other than the belt clip problem I like the radio and buying it used I got a great deal plus a discount.
So don't be afraid to buy one whether used or new, just because it's Yaesu doesnt mean it's a bad HT, you can get bad HT's with the other radio companys too. If you have a problem programming the radio then buy the program for your computer and program your HT that way.

I am on dissability and had to save for quite awhile to get this radio. I get 637.00 a mo. on ssi [try living on that and saving to buy a radio..its like counting grains of salt!]...yeasu, good solid company, solid products, How could I go wrong.
I thought this radio would be the best choice for my first NEW radio in yrs. The perfect radio to use as I do my daily chores around the place rain or shine...
Boy was I wrong. I didnt have much problem prgming it and the audio prob. I had read about was not a problem at all. The problems started when I noticed it didnt do a full wt on 6 mtrs and the rcv on 6 mtrs was null. Then 1/2 the tones wouldnt be reconized by the rptr and didnt even work to control my echolink prgm.
I went to town one day and decided to use the 12 vlt cig plug and within the 7 mile trip the radios display had turned completely black.
The radio was very warm and I couldnt see anything on the display.
Called yeasu and was told "well its just stupid to use the A,B,C,or D, tones as commands for a rptr or echolink" and I was "dumb" for doing it.
Called the PR dept and complained about that and was told I needed to send in the radio for repairs...Sent it in... I called to check the status of my radio and was told..."No problems can be found"
AND that "its normal for the lcd to go black".
I dont know of any lcd's that its "normal" to not be able to read them because they turn completely black.
Needless to say I am not happy with this radio and will not be buying yeasu products in the future. I saved for mos. to buy this radio and to be told I was stupid and dumb by them is the straw that broke the camels back...I will be calling them and telling them to keep the radio and I'll be sending back the case and mike for a full refund. Yea I know...good luck buddy.

You think you are getting allot of radio by the description and the price and the Yaesu name, Well Not! I have had most of the problems that everybody talks about and then some. I like my Ft 8900 but this is a real expensive paper weight.If you try to use a external Mag Antenna,and it does not matter which one, be it single band or dual band be prepared for inter-mod,unless you are not in the city. So to sum it up don't waste your money there are better and less expensive choices.
