Excellent Radio

Excellent choice...no regrets. Very thoughtfully designed radio. It feels great in my hand: solid & not too big. The rx audio is awesome--plenty loud and very clear. I talked in loud & clear on one of my first nets on a VHF repeater that is 30.5 miles from my house. The battery lasts about 3 days of just listening & little tx. Very impressive. Very usable, unique features in the radio. Highly recommend.

Don't buy silver, only black one

This is a great HT, let's face it, it is built as a tank and it is very solid. Receive is great, TX is powerful.
I buy silver one and I reccomend it to buy a black one, because the silver paint wear off very easy, and soon the rig looks like get back from the Stalingrad battle.
Display is great, easy to read, menu is not that complicated as I read here, all you need is to get use on it.
Sensitivity is excellent and every detail on it is solid built.
I test it under the water as well, and it works perfect, which I didn;t expect.
If you want a serious HT this is the one for you.
Reccomended

There's far too much in it!

Heavy for its size, runs hot, packs too much into a small package when all you really need is VHF/UHF, great on BBC Radio 4, lousy on Classic FM (that's ok - I use my DAB digital radio for that, LOL) and there is a hum reported on my transmission when using CTCSS. Otherwise it's a fine rig.

If it only all worked well

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot to love about this radio, but some of the features look better on paper than in operation. The AM radio feature is basically worthless as it doesn't have the ability to pull in anything but the strongest local stations. I've also tried a number of the shortwave frequencies with all kinds of antennas, including a 100 ft wire. Reception was no better than my $20 Eton radio.
But, for it's primary uses, the 2M and 70cm bands, it works flawlessly. The menu system is easy to understand and there's a ton of options in the setup which are handy. I use the VX-7R Commander software to manage the memories and am delighted with how useful it has made the radio.
One has to wonder though if a FT-60 wouldn't do just as well.

I had about 30 HTs since 1977. I just purchased the VX-7R and (so far) it's the best of all.
It's a great radio. No complaints.

Second review

This is really a wonderful HT. It is a really good shortwave receiver. It has a really hot receive, too. I have had mine for over a year now and if it had to be replaced, I would buy it again. Rugged, good battery life, excellent! The 6 meter feature is useless, since it only puts out less than 1 watt. The same goes for 220. but, I have no desire to use either of those bands, especially 6 meters with a HT! Great radio!!!

Second VX7 is a winner!

R and L Electronics replaced my first VX7 in record time and the second one works great!
Seems one of the few bugs the VX7 has is a PLL problem that happens in only a few units....I just happened to get one.
Have had a lot of Ht's and this one beats em all!
Best receive....great transmit! Easy to use too!

bad broadcast FM front end
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months

This radio is very good except for one thing: The broadcast FM front-end easily overloads if you are near a broadcast tower. I wish they would give it some more dynamic range. This is especially true if you connect a better antenna to the radio, such as a roof-top mobile.

I love it :-)

I love this HT. I am new to the hobby and have not been around all that long but I took the time to research my purchase and this radio seemed like a very good deal. It has been able to do anything I have asked of it and then some. I listen to all the local repeaters on 2M and 440. Hardly ever use 220 and I am building a J-Pole to give 6M a try. There are some good 6M repeaters around. I drag it everywhere with me. I take it to work and listen to one of my favorite repeaters till 11AM when the news comes on. ( I have all the local TV and radio stations programed along with some local scanner stations including my VFD. ) Then I listen to the news on channel 13 and after the new I listen to Friends. Then I switch back to the local repeater and my VFD in dual band mode till I go home. When I go home I turn it back on and participate in the local nets then chat. I turn it off between midnight and 2AM or whenever I go to sleep.
Trust me it gets allot of use each day and I have never had a problem. The battery can last between 1 and 2 days depending on the usage. I have almost all the accessories for it including the charging stand. The charger works awesome too. Some people stated that they had problems with the charger but I have had nothing yet and don't expect to. I live so close to the repeater that the rubber duck works just fine for me but sometime I need to get that far away transmission and hook it up to a mag-mount dual band antenna on my AC unit and it does make a big difference. I think I have a very good system with this radio.
The only thing I do not like about it is the water proofing. It has a bit of a muffling sound on the internal mic. When I have time I just use my external mic and there is no problem.
One more dislike is that the temp. sensor is inside a sealed unit and thus cant give you the true outside temp. Try talking for a long time and see how it heats up :-)
Read the manual and see it has allot of easter eggs in it such as Weather, Shortwave and Marine frequencies preprogrammed in for you.
I cant speak from experiences with other HTs or base stations but I can tell you that this HT is one good unit!
As I stated "It does everything I want it to do and then some !"
I highly recommend this HT for its reliability, size, battery usage and features based on my experiences with the Yaesu VX-7R.
I got the black. It looks good and has not scratched yet.
I hope this review helps someone with there purchase.
