Too Expensive, Better Free Alternatives
|

I have a license for the N4PY radio control software. I was (but no longer) using it for the Jupiter. The first thing I noticed that is looked to me to be nothing more than a "jazzed up" version of TenTec's own free software. Second I was very disappointed to learn after purchasing a license that every time I install it to another computer, I have to send N4PY the code and he in return has to send me a code to unlock the software for that particular computer! Yuck!!! Then I learned that every year I would have to pay a very expensive renewal fee to get upgrades to the program. Paying for upgrades is not too bad if the fee were reasonable. It is customary in the software industry to charge about 15% of the annual license fee to get support and upgrades. N4PY's support fee is way beyond that.
The other issue is that to use the software on other radios now requires paying for other licenses. Want to use it on Orion? Another fee.
As for functionality, it is not very different from many free programs out there that work on multiple radios and include digital mode software as part of the package. Yup, the N4PY software works, but there are better FREE alternatives that offer more functionality and which are easier to install on multiple computers.

I use this software to control my Argonaut V, and Carl provides an excellent product. His software works well, and he responds right away when I have had a question. I am a pleased customer.

Carl N4PY's program makes your Pegasus truely a flying horse!

N4PY's Pegasus/Jupiter Control Software does an outstanding job in my shack.
I've tried the free software packages, and haven't found a better combination for my use than N4PY with MixW
Of course for any amateur's particular needs, 'mileage may vary'.
I've only a couple thousand contacts logged with the N4PY running my Pegasus so far, and will report another couple thousand down the road.
The cost is trivial in the scope of keepinga decent shack up and running for the year, so I'm not put off with paying the modest license fee.

Excellent Software Product

I've been using the N4PY control program for more than five years. Carl's program is simply excellent.
I presently use it as my only Internet Remote Control program with an Icom 7800 and Kenwood TS-480. With nothing more than a tiny Dell laptop PC and multi-media headset, I can operate from any Wi-Fi hot-spot location. The program also integrates an interface for the K1EL WinKey chip set.
When operating CW in QSK, the timing of the N4PY program in conjunction with the K1EL chip results in perfectly-timed QSK. Carl's product is a solid 5.

Well, as one of "Us Old Guys" I find this software great! It not only runs my Jupiter, but also runs my Argo V and my RX-320D. All for one price! Yes for security purposes, you need to request a key when installing it on another computer, but it is free on as many computers as you own. The annual fee isn't that bad if you want to get upgrades automatically sent to you year after year.
This software does 10 times more than the Ten-Tec software, and you have many more features too. Keep up the good work Carl!

N4PY's implementation of this control program for the excellent Ten-Tec Jupiter is superb. Mr. Moreschi has provided an interface that is intuitive, incredibly flexible (you can tune via software knob, via digital input from the computer keypad, via the accessory pod, or even via a lovely 'sliderule' type display that shows each band, with colors to denote operator privileges and allocations.) There is a particularly useful memory function which N4PY- Carl has pre-loaded with dozens of interesting frequncies from military, beacon, aircraft, as well as foreign and domestic broadcasters. You can add your own, or make entirely discrete memory lists of your networks, frequencies, stations, and parameters such as SSB, bandwidth, filter, etc. and it will come up set perfectly each and every time.
We would note the superior capacity to operate 'split' that Carl has made available; easy, intuitive, and so flexible that the Jupiter performs as a two-receiver rig.
N4PY's support is a model for others to follow, his answers are often truly within minutes of an inquiry. The program takes the Jupiter, a fine radio already, up another level entirely. It can be as colorful and gorgeously eye-pleasing as the Bridge of the Starship Enterprise, or as utilitarian and no-frill as a military rig. Your choice, simply via the many drop down and easy to understand menus. The software easily interfaces with the powerful Logic 7 logging software for seamless operation. Simply put, it is a joy to use! Highly Recommended by K1AHL.

As previously stated, what can I add to the many glowing reviews of this excellent software that hasn't already been said? One thing I can add, is that Carl is a wonderfully patient customer service person. When I encountered a computer glitch -- NOT a software problem -- Carl seemingly wouldn't rest until he came up with a solution to get my (don't you just love Windows?!) computer's mixed-up state in order. I was amazed at how willing he was to help me without making me feel like a complete idiot (I had done a pretty fair job of that myself, thank you very much, hi). THANK YOU, CARL! VY 73 OM. My Jupiter and my RX-350D are SUPERCHARGED.

This software makes the Jupiter come alive! It is stable, gives you more options than the rig itself, and the support given by Carl is first class. I use it for my Jupiter as well as my RX-320D. Periodically, Carl sends out upgrades too which just enhance things more. Worth the fee for sure!
