Well recieved the kenwood-480sat back from Kenwood service, opened the box... the control head is cracked, one of the knobs looks like someone put a soldering iron to it and melted a small part of the knob, missing a screw in the back of the control head. Called Kenwood and they said they done an inventory of how it came to them... I would have to call Burghardt.. well with the communication problems.. trying to reach Burghardt's I gave up
I will never ever buy a Kenwood product
You pay alot of money for a rig and Burghardt's seems they don't give a damn... they shipped the rig to Kenwood fully knowing that the control head was damaged by them.

Qualilty Workmanship NOT

I sent my TS450S to Burghardt for repair in May. It took over 2 months to replace a leaky capacitor. The charge was over the top in my opinion. In addition, it took several attempts via email and phone to get a response from them.
What I am most curious about is the fact that there was a sticker placed on the back of the radio from an outside repair center in Florida. So, I do believe that my repair was farmed out. Of course that would explain why my bill was so high and it took over two months.
Last but not least, the way my radio was packaged for the trip home was terrible. When I saw the box on my front stoop, I thought of the movie with Jim Cary as the UPX delivery man. Thank god the radio is operating 100%.

Communication?

My third repair at Burghardt. My first was a warranty repair 5-6 years ago. Fast 2 weeks, went well. Second repair, IC756P2, Three weeks. Got a call for go ahead on repairs, Perfect!! My last repair, sent May 9th this year. Took 6 weeks. No communication at any time on their part. No email response. I called to see if they were open for business and had my rig? I got through 1 time on the phone. Person was short and not friendly. Rig was sent in factory box, was retuned in a nice box with blowmold around it. My box and inserts MIA! So I sent them $20.00 to ship MY box back to me. Got it 1 week later. I am sure that the box switch is only to protect the rig. And thats great, but it should be up to the customer? Repair to my TS570 is 90%. Still a minor problem that could have been avoided if I was contacted before it was retuned to me.
I am not complaining at all. This is just how it went for My RIG and Me.
I have been in the Auto Repair Business for 34 Years. If I didnt Communicate with my Customers, I would have no Customers.
I will not send any Ham gear for repair to anyone any more. If I cant fix it myself, I will sell it as broken. And thats that!
My 4 rating is for past repairs. Good luck to Burghardt in the future.

Update Pt.2
|
Time owned: months
|
It's been a week now since my TS-690 was returned to me for warranty repair work. It seems to be working fine now. My one suggestion is that Mr. Smith get someone to handle the phone and email. My concerns began when my rig wasn't returned at the original date I was told and then finding the phone going unanswered for hours at a time. Fortunately it seems that this is a case of a small business working out some kinks after some big changes. I wish Mr. Smith good luck during this lousy economy.
He backed his warranty quickly and I am satisfied with the work done.

I have found Burghardt to be a great repair service that I have used for many years. Dave, Jim and Mike have been great at handling hard to find intermittent problems on two of my 940's and two of my 950's. There were times that the problem reappeared and they went the extra mile and warrantied the work until it was fixed.
I have always gotten my boxes back and packed correctly. There was one time that UPS had dinged up the box and damaged a fan cover and the rig cover on a 950. Dave had new one's back to me within a week. Great service and keen technical problem solving seem to be norm there. I would recommend their service to anyone. If you have a Kenwood problem look no farther.

Survival in Question?
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Adding to the speculation about their future, I noticed that in recent weeks Burghardt appears to be selling its inventory of upgrade INRAD filters on Ebay. I bought a 2.1 kHz filter for my FT-890AT, and then had them install it (in place of the soldered-in ceramic filter). I sent the radio double-boxed, with the original FT-890 box with its foam block end caps inside a larger box. The price was as quoted and the job was done right. However, the radio was returned in a single box. Yes it was wrapped in bubble wrap and surrounded by foam peanuts so it survived the trip, but where's the Yaesu box? Thanks, Burghardt.

Reading between the lines

I too have been a loyal customer for several years. However, their used site hadn't been updated for a couple weeks in February. Prior to that, they were updating it every couple of days. I e-mailed them that it hadn't been updated and asked if I could receive a zipped file of their recent used list. The website was updated within the hour. They have also been listing several new items on their used site prior to that as well. My guess is it accessories for no longer supported equipment, etc.
I also mentioned their secure certificate for the their on-line ordering expired back in December and noticed they haven't renewed it.
The final thing that has got my curiosity up is I asked about trading an excellent FT-1000MP Mark V with filters and noise reduction mod for an Icom 756 ProII and it was an extremely low offer. I understand they aren't going to pay eBay prices or even swap website prices, but I thought it was very low.
Even if the rumor is true, I'm glad they will still be around for service. They've always done a great job with that!

I have never had a problem with them, been very reliable on my end, as far as NO Sales, not sure that is true, There was an mention of this before a few weeks back and it turned out to be false, I hope so in this case and that they are still in full business. 73 Jim N0XE

NO MORE RADIO SALES
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I always bought equipment from Burghardt since my first Rx...an SX-101A...from Stan Burghardt. Now Burghardt has ceased any sales and only doing radio repair. My rating of 5 is a reflection of my satisfaction with them over the years. Bummer they're dropping sales but they are a great resource for repair at a reasonable price. 73, W0FVR

Good job on TS930s
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
My beloved TS930s lost transmit power in late November. After searching for weeks for someone to repair it I came upon Burghardt.
It was sent in mid December and even with the holidays in full swing I had the radio back in about a month in perfect operating condition. The price was reasonable and they even sent the replaced parts back... two rf driver transistors.
The radio has worked fine now for over 2 months and I expect to get another few decades out of it.
I would use them again.
