Agree with Steve's review. VERY similar experience as mine 3 years ago and took months and threatened legal action to get the "marginal at best" SB200 conversion from him. Lack of action and poor attitude and excuses were all I got. The amp has since been electrically updated, cosmetics improved and then sold at a big loss.

KM1H POOR QUALITY

I purchased an SB-220 and had it sent to Carl,KM1H for modification. He did no cosmetics and pencil scratched the front panel where tuning should be and left a gaping hole where he removed the bandswitch. I called Carl and asked for my knob back to at least fill the hole. He refused and said it is his and he already sold it. Rather than getting into a heated discussion, I found one here in Danbury Ct at W1QJ, gudguyham who also does this 6M mod work. I mentioned my displeasure with the cosmetics and he offered to clean it up and install an input tuning circuit. I immediately delivered the amp and we bench tested it into a bird wattmeter and dummy load. The results were pathetic. With 70 watts of drive it started arcing and when drive was removed, it remained locked up. Further testing and review proved KM1H's mod was very poor with undersized plate tuning capacitor which arc'd over, improper parasitic chokes causing oscillations, transistor keying circuit locking up, no input tuning circuit, no standby/operate switch installed and no cosmetic work. I asked gudguyham, W1QJ, if he would repair it and do some cosmetics, he agreed but said it will require gutting the transmitter and starting over. I called Carl and explained what we had found and he repeatedly denied it all and kept hanging the up phone. I found him to be very rude and certainly not apologetic. W1QJ did complete the repair and I could not believe what it looked like when I picked it up, as close to a new looking amp as one could expect. He installed all heavy duty parts, input tuning, standby switch, restenciled and clear coated the front panel. The amp now puts out over 1100 watts and has smooth tuning yielding 40% more than Carl said it would output. I have been a ham for 50 years and never had this type of situation with another amateur and for all the reasons above, I can not recommend KM1H.

I had Carl do a conversion for me on an SB-220. It arrived well packed and in wonderful shape. Puts out just shy of 700 watts being driven by an FT-857D thru an Ameritron Amp Buffer.
It took a few months for it all to come together, with finding one on ebay to final delivery, but it was highly worth it.
Carl even managed to tame the cheap Chinese Taylor 572B to run in it.
A+++

I bought my "Carl" KM1H SB220 6mtr Amp a little over a year ago now. It arrived safely and was well packed...It works great and I am very happy with it. The unit produces a very CLEAN powerful signal that dramatically improves me being heard. Carl supplied my unit from his inventory stock and the one he sent was very close to being a mint unit. I have only praise for Carl's attention to detail and workmanship on this SB226.
A good friend of mine, just bought a KM1H SB221 off eBay. He had a KM1H SB200 (Little Carl) that he dearly loved but has now passed it on to another ham that has been admiring it.
Bottom line....If you can find one, I suggest that you immediately buy it. All the hams I know that have a "CARL" praise it. You will not be disappointed.

I purchased a converted SB230 from Carl...must have been 10 years ago now.
Still working great. 500 or so watts, without a fan!! Wish someone made something like that new!
I have two of them amps for HF also...Just can't seem to let go of 'em!

I bought a SB-200 from Carl about 4 months ago it came in packed very well with no shipping damage. I am very impressed with it. about 800 watts out and no problems whatsoever, I would highly recomend his amps to any one. A fellow ham freind of mine just bought an SB-220 and I tested it out for him, works perfect packed very well and no shipping damage. I would reccomend his Amps to anyone.

I wish I could say the same for me as review below. My amp came after a LONG delay of months, cosmetics were poor, scratches all over the cabinet, power transformer had unsoldered loose connection on a terminal strip and was intermittant. Output appears to be within specs for power input of these SB200 conversions. I will never get my money back for what I paid. Surely better cosmetic rigs are used on these conversions than what I got. Shipping was marginally adequate. One side of case was against the box's side. I feel a linear should be done and shipped when one is told it will be or adequate explanations should be given every week or so. Such was not my case unfortunately. I am sure this ham is good at what he does on circuit design and reoutfitting the tank circuit, but attention to cosmetics and such is poor in my book. I will sell my unit for $450 if anyone is interested. My experience, your mileage may vary..... San

Ahh, Jeremy communications or something like that. Well after struggling with an SB-220 conversion several years ago, went to the guru for help. Fixed me right up, but took awhile to get done and drove to QTH to pick up, but the results are worth it. People can not believe 1200 w out on a pair of chineese 3-500Z's, but it is true, and never had so much as a hiccup after Carl worked his magic, plus instant on is nice as well. Band opens, flip a switch and go!
