I miss mine!!!
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
My Yaesu 101ZD was my first HF rig. It taught me how to operate a tube-type radio, and though it didn't have all the fancy features of a modern rig, there was a sence of pride when I worked DX of 40 meters split, manually tuning the VFO between my transmit/receive frequency.
It had a digital frequency counter, which I'd prefer, and a classic look.
I no longer have mine and have missed it ever since.

The best of Yaesu!!!

Super old radio which oozs character, you have to work for the DX with these old ladys, none of this just pushing a button and away we go carry on. Great audio reports plus it looks like what a radio is supposed to look like.

Great 25 year old HF rig from Yaesu.

I've just restored a Yaesu FT-101ZD MK III for a newly licensed amateur colleague, who is suitably impressed with this 25 year old 'Boat Anchor' which cost around 50 US dollars. The serial no. indicates that it's a 1982 model and with the exception of the 'MODE' switch, none of the front panel controls needed replacing. A pair of Sylvania 6146B finals were purchased to restore full RF output power, but apart from the valves all I had to buy was a can of switch cleaner for relays and rotary pots. The rig came with the CW narrow filter and rear panel fan installed, which runs so quietly we can't even hear it with the AF gain turned off. Received signal strength and audio quality was excellent on 20m and 40m, but I was in for a BIG surprise on 80m which is normally wiped out with a noise level over S9. The 'Noise Blanker' is amazing and even with a level over S9, switching to 'NB' cancels out all the noise allowing even weak signals to be heard. The digital display is accurate to 100Hz and compensates for LSB/USB and CW offsets, which you don't always find on these older HF rigs. The IF width, 'APF' and 'Notch' controls all improve receiver operation and sensitivity is excellent especially on all bands, even with the 10dB attenuator switched on! The RF speech processor is also a useful add on and good reports were obtained using the old Yaesu fist mike, which had also stood the test of time and required no maintenance. I'll bet that a Shure 444 or similar base mike would make transmission reports even better, as the 4 pin socket ensures that older mike wiring is very simple. All in all, money well spent and if you can find one going cheap.....

I have had my ZD for over 2 years, I have restored it to as new. If my radio lasts another 20 plus years, that will certainly do me.

Great Rig
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months
|
Don't think I'd give anything a 5/5, nothing is perfect. However for an old rig This one is hard to beat. I have mine for about a year and use it for my primary rig. I like the easy to use controls, reliability of the tube finals and simplicity of the older rigs. Tubes have their advantage for emergency communications also. This thing will handle high SWR (within reason) without killing the finals as happens with solid state. The disadvantage on emergency (battery) power is the higher current drain at standby due to the filiments.
Audio TX and RX quality is fine as well as RX sensitivity and selectivity. Frequency stability is good. Mine is the Mark II with the optional filters, WARC Bands and the digital VFO. This rig is also easy to use with the optional external VFO.

GREAT FUN TO USE
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I have had this radio for a few years now and used it mainly on receive.
I use it with an Kenwood MC50 Mic and get good audio reports with the distinctive 'valve' sound.
It has been used and performed well on all bands.
Excellent build, easy to repair if ever needed, proper switches, a pleasure to operate.
I am ashamed to admit that my dear wife has finally put her foot down and due to it's size (which I like) it has to go! Sob, Sob.

Great rig for its age...
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Rating: 4.5. I really, really like my mint Mk III. The receiver, when running the 500 Hz cw filter and audio peaking filter, is impressive. The transmitter sounds really good on the air with my Shure 522, especially with the processor off. BTW, the RF processor really works well.
The radio has many characteristics that most of us like:
- Built tough
- Reasonable performance for a 25 year old rig
- Classic styling
- WARC bands included
I will keep mine for a long while.

Great!

I have had the FT-101ZD for some time now. I previously owned an FT-101B many years ago, I used it with a transvertor for 2m and also as a general rx for the hf bands.
My current station consists of an Icom IC-756PROIII for hf and I use a Kenwood TS-2000 for 2m and 70cms.
I don't think I'll ever get rid of the FT-101ZD it's just a great fun radio to play with. I often switch between the 756 and the 101ZD to compare rx's, and the 101ZD never ceases to amaze me. For it's age it is superb!
One other thing - should the rig develop a fault it is very easy to work on, and cheap to repair. This coupled with the vast amount of information/knowledge availabe for the 101ZD it is an all time GREAT! And well worth 5/5.
Regards
Duncan
