Fantastic & it Plays!!

XY0T is in the Log on 18MHZ!! What more of a complement can you give an antenna that you just put up! And this antenna is the Bencher Skyhawk. I have been a Ham for 35 years and have had many beams up and at different heights. But after doing a lot of research and reading a lot of Feedback from different people I settled on the Shyhawk.
For a Tribander its a Fantastic Antenna, and for a 5 band beam its even more so. The beam has three elements on 20-15 meters and 4 on 10. The wierd PVC tube on the front of the antenna is the torgue compensator, and it really helps. There is also some gain on 18 MHZ and 24 MHZ. You do need a tuner on these bands though.
Mine is at 54 feet, and is the only antenna I have up except for the HF2V vertical. It is packaged well, each element in its own bag, and very clear and consice instructions. The Boom to mast clamp is state of the Art, approx 35 minutes from the ground to top of the tower, attaching it and getting down, wonderful!!
But how does it play... Well the opening sentenance says a lot. Not many US hams on Sunday worked the XY0T station on 18 MHZ, and not only did I work him but I worked him as the second or third station through the european pileups!!. Mostly one or two calls to the rest of the world. If you could only put up one antenna, want one to last that uses S/S hardware, steel revits, and a wonderful feed system..Go with the Skyhawk. You will love it!

Followup

This is a followup to my review from April of 2000 as KA1EIV. It's been up there for 2 years and 3 months and it still talks! Bencher shipped me the Driven Element Mod, I installed it and checked what connections I could, without taking it down. Everything is still functioning fine. I understand the new feed system gives a little bit better SWR on the WARC bands but I'm still using the original feed system. The tuner in my TS-2000 allows me to use the WARC bands with no problems. Great antenna!

Monoband performance at a tribander price
|
Time owned: unknown months

I had noted ads for the Skyhawk for some months before seeing the demo model at the W9DXCC meeting in Chicago in September 1999. Bob Locher W9KNI pointed out numerous
features and readily answered my questions. I was delighted to find that the antenna has no traps and uses full sized elements. The attention to ease of mounting the antenna to the boom is the kind of extra attention to detail which appeals to me. I ordered the antenna the following Monday from R&L Electronics. It arrived only three days after my order was placed, having been drop-shipped direct from the factory.
K8LEE, WA8JOC and I assembled the antenna in just a few hours. The stainless steel pop rivets make putting the Skyhawk together a snap. Potential buyers should be aware that they need to make an investment in a pop rivet gun. I got a good one for only $14.
The designers, K3LR and WA3FET are to be commended!

This is one great antenna. From the electrical to mechanical design, I have been happy. Easy to put together and it works like a champ. Just bought a new house and will be stcking a couple of these. Highly recommended.
