got this 20 years old trx from ebay for little money and modified it for D-Star usage.
I love this 5608 since it is so easy to modify, easy to operate and has a very quiet fan.

Standard Rocks

Time owned: more than 12 months

Amazing, I just picked one of these up about a year ago. It is crazy how much better the receive and transmit audio is over all my other radios. It is much better then my Kenwood 741,732,733 and other Icom radio's.
Standard please take the rights back from Yaesu and start making kick ass radios again. To bad Standard went away, the quality of these radios just smokes the current radios offered from the big 3.

A Great Deal on the Used Market

I've had my 5608 in service as a base station for about four months. Not pushing the envelope as to its capabilities, but I'm totally satisfied for my outlay ($175 e-Bay). This unit HAS been mobile, but seems to work fine on all functions, despite showing obvious wear from being used as a mobile rig. Working into a rigid J-pole about 20 feet up, I'm hitting all the repeaters in the Puget Sound area, and hearing most anything, sometimes even faint signals simplex that others can't copy. A tough little rig, and well worth it if you can confirm that it hasn't been abused and get it for a low price.

Nice Twin Band Radio
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I have owned my 5608 for over 8 years now. It has been used mobile 99% of its life in up-state NY. Only now has it been giving me problems [while transmitting (doesn't matter what band) the radio shuts off]. However, while it was in service its been a great radio. I like that the radio can simultaneously receive on 2M and 70cm. The cross-band repeater worked well too. The radio comes with CTCSS encode and de-code. De-code is nice, especially on 2M where intermod is a problem. One of the reasons I picked this radio is extended receive capability on both bands. The radio also receives the AM aircraft band (commercial VHF not military UHF). I would sometimes use the 2M portion of the radio as the IF for my 2M to 6M tranverter. It worked great as a 70cm/6M cross-band repeater. I also like that the radio has separate antenna connections for each band (made it easy to run the transverter and separate antennas). I performed the 800 MHz antenna modification by installing a TNC connecter on the back of the radio and running a piece of coax to the circuit board. I had read reports that the 800 MHz receive wasn't good after the modification was performed, but I found that it worked good (I was using a external cell phone antenna). Having a key pad on the microphone was nice, one could enter frequencies directly to the VFO or memory. The mobile mounting bracket could have been better. It clamps down on the radio and over time (especially in a mobile environment) the rubber pads wear out and the radio slides out. Overall its been a good radio especially since its been mobile for 8 years straight.
The problem with the radio shutting off wasn't the radio after all. A corroded battery connection wasn't letting enough current though. New wires fixed the problem.
