Very good speaker mic., but a bit large  Time owned: more than 12 months
The M-4 is the matching speaker/mic. for my MX-15, MX-10Z, MX-6, and MX-2 SSB/CW handhelds. Transmitted audio reports are excellent with this mic. Receive audio is about as good as you can get from this sort of arrangement. The MS-1 won't work with these older radios because the mic. plug wiring is different than on the later Pico series (MX-xxS) handhelds. Otherwise, there is no real difference between the M-4 and the current MS-1.

As with the MS-1, if I have any complaint at all it's that the mic. is a bit bigger and fatter than most modern speaker/mics used today. I won't rate it a five for that reason. Also, the M-4 has become really hard to find as these rigs have been discontinued for about 20 years now. Still, if you can find one and have one of the old, low powered (200-300mW) Mizuho HTs, by all means pick one up.
