I own the 857 and the big brother 897. They are both great rigs. Easy to use and very portable.

Outstanding!

The instructions are not the best... but the radio is! I love the zero beat flashing light that lets you know you are right on them
This radio will also work beautifully with the Icom AH4 tuner.. Please see my comment about the "Yaesu Tune Control" made by better rf for details.
This radio has more features than the 706MKIIG and it sells for less money... go figure!

Great Little Radio

Purchased my Yaesu FT-857D about 3 months ago strictly for mobil use. Yes this transceiver is memory driven, but all new transceivers of this configuration are memory driven. I suggest you read the manaul many times anyway until u understand the systems. I have my FT-857D hooked up in my truck (pick-up). I am using a little tarheel II for the antenna. I have been in amateur radio operator since 1947 and I have some habits that are not breakable. I have installed a SWR/PWR meter so as to be able to tune the radio. The system works great I have had some DX and lot of ragchews. If you do not want to put a meter in the system there is a Turbo- Tuner you can purchase and this will hooke up to the transceiver and do the tuning for you. This is a GREAT RADIO! Yaesu service has been great in some of my questions and has help in the set-up for the mobil use and I thank them for there help.

Great Rig
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I bought one of the very first FT-857's, way before the D model. This radio is a great work horse for my mobile. It has never gone back for anything and has no issues. I may even buy a D version for my shack for VHF/UHF and a have the HF side as backup if mt FT-2000D ever fails.
Only thing I have added was the Inrad narrow SSB filter. Tried the stock Yaesu narrow filter, but the Inrad filter is far superior.
Great radio and a good bang for your buck.

Great Package

The 857D is probably the best mobile/portable rig out there. The DSP is equal in quality to far more expensive rigs. I use this rig for fixed and portable digi operations. The rig operates great with rig control and runs digi modes comfortably, without overheating. Receiver is sensitive and good for picking out those DX digi signals.
No complaints, no issues. Good product.

Still the best

If you are going portable and want a little more power than 5-10 watts the FT-857(D) is the ticket. Many other DC-daylight boxes out there simply draw to much current/amperage on receive compared to this rig. I like the slim design and have used it in many different contests, VHF/ UHF rovering etc. This rig will not let you down. No problems here! Mike. KC2PLJ

My DX Weapon !
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I got 2 ft 857, one in my shack that you use mostly for v/u operation and another one fitted with cw and ssb filters and Txco for portable operation in my car or outdoor. With the portable one i made a lot of dx and pile up using 100w, ldg z100 and my homebrew multiband vertical antenna made with a 5 meter fiberglass fishing rod using my car like portable station. In the car in summer is very hot inside the but the rig with his cooling system work fine and cool. The receiver is very good and also the TX. The DSP works fine but along the xtal filter works even better !
The FT meter from LDG is a mast !
When I used it on 144 mhz ssb operation I got always complementary reports for the good modulation in the ssb, always from Icom owners HI!
Thanks for reading my 73 to eham, net members !
