Surplus buy -- at the right price  Time owned: more than 12 months
Weller discontined the "EC" (Electronic Control) in 2002, after 25 years of production.
This occured at the same time that Weller's manufacturing was moved to Mexico from the USA. The model series went through a number of updates and style changes during this 25-year time period.

The EC1002 (analog dial) and EC2002 (digital readout) were the 2 most popular models of the series. The EC-1002 pictured above had 3 different (series 1, 2 and 3) control boards.

In addition to the earlier comments reagrding the EC1002 - and normal heater (EC234) replacement -- the TRIAC on the control board or the temperature sensor/spring assembly in the iron appar to be the most common component failures with the station.

Since this model has now been discontinued for more than 2 years, I would not recommend a purchase price (used) over that of the currently available Weller WES51 or WESD51 stations.
This station sold for around $199 in 2002 - when manufactured in the USA.

Troublesome but repairable  Time owned: more than 12 months
Similar experience to previous post. Have the EC1002S-0 power unit. After 5 or so hours of operation it quit. It was out of warranty and Weller told me I could get a new control board for 125 dollars. Found cold solder joints on the output triac. Some silver solder on the terminals and it is working again. I put some heat sink compound on the heat sink too. Hope this info can save others some money.

Unreliable  Time owned: more than 12 months
The thermocouple controller keeps the tip tempeature at or near the desired set point. However, after only occasional use over a four year period, the EC1302A electrostatic dissipative 20 watt soldering tool quit heating. Stepping through the troubleshooting section of the operating instructions yielded the diagnosis of a bad circuit board in the EC1002S power unit (the blue box). For the $200 I spent, I was expecting a much longer service life.
