Just doesn't last long enough
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Bought this 2800 about 2 yrs ago from hamcity.com when it was on sale for 115.00. I have used this unit as both a mobile and base station. Recently I put it in my van so I could talk with my wife on low power simplex. During our trip, I was able to talk with her most of the trip then the radio for no reason just stopped transmitting. After doing some checking, I found the finals were bad. I was going to send it back to Yaesu for repairs but they wanted $90.00 an hour for labor not counting parts. I now own a new Kenwood..

I have 2 of these. One in my shop as a base, and one working 24/7 on APRS. No problems at all, with over a year of use. Great audio, easy to program. Great inexpensive, but basic 2 meter radio.

Love it!!!

I love this radio, Had it over a year now and really NO complaints at all.
Sound is great, power is great, mic is great..
And CHEAP!
The only complaint I have is that the freq knob is turned WAY too easily!
But I just simply locked out the freq knob and use the mic for moving through mems or freqs.
And if I really plan on doing alot of tuning, then I will just unlock it till I'm done and then relock it...
No big deal at all.
I love this radio, and if I ever need another 2M rig I would buy this one again FOR SURE!

Another Yaesu Bites The Dust
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

Well I knew better, but I was 'taken in' by the great price. Finding a 65 watt, 2 meter radio for only $129 who could resist? I've been using a FT-2800 on my EchoLink node, KB9TMP-L #7492. For a year everything was fine until………….. it stopped dead in the middle of an ID announcement. When I made it home I found that the final transistor had left the building. I have checked the antenna and feedline and both are OK. This is now the third Yaesu radio that I've owned that has quit transmitting. (FT-8100 & FT-60 before this one) You would think I'd have learned by now. Lucky for me I had another FT-2800 so I could get the link back on the air. (How long is anyone’s guess!) I was considering buying an FT-817nd for QRP work but that sure isn’t going to happen now. I wondered why I keep seeing so many Yaesu radios for auction of 'FeeBay', now I guess I know. There will soon be another 'tech special' for auction! If I ever own another Yaesu radio of any kind I need to have myself committed! I'll never buy another Yaesu!!!!

first impressions

looks to be well made, like the heatsink case looks modern, knobs are a joke they just wibble and wobble like a belly dancer on a wet floor realy the need to supply some bushes to us to mend the cock up.microphones have been said to be quite not supprised its blocked up with a plastic cover know one not even yaesu no why its there. drill a 1mm hole in it that should give you more audio it is under the electret in front of mike caseing.base feet not rubberised so it will slip around use a rubber mat to sit radio on.altogether a nice radio but quality has dropped over the years no better than what cb,s are made shame but made in china, but a nice price, if it goes wrong bin it,will not become a classic as i won,t last log enough to be one,let you know what it sounds like when i get my ham radio licence in the next month God willing...jeff ps nice but how the mighty yaesu have fallen kenwood and icom are better by far.

Great radio for the Money
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

I have 2 of these. One in the car for 3 years, and 1 as the shack 2m rig for about 1 year. No problems with either. I especially like the "hidden" menu to adjust power and deviation levels, very handy for using it to drive an amp. (I turned down high power to 38 watts, to keep from blowing amp input)and the track tuning seems to work well. Low inter-mod. Receive sensitivity seems to be good. Price is extremely good. Whats not to like?. A good solid, quite performer, at least for me.

Not Bad

I installed a new FT-2800 in my vehicle about 2 years ago. I have had no real problems with it, just a few inconveniences. In my opinion the tuning knob is too easily turned, it's easy to accidentally change frequencies. When using a repeater there is always a noise burst when the repeater drops, I did not experience that with my IC-V8000. The external speaker jack is in a really inconvenient place. On the plus side I like the no-noise cooling, the WX feature, and the reliability.

good radio for price

I use ft-2800m for main radio in car.
it always works.
I will recommend ft-2800m to any one except.
I put O-ring around volume and squelch knob, so knob are not so loose. there are space between outer shaft of knob to recessed control panel, I saw commercial version of similar radio already have O-ring installed , so knob are not so loose, I also did same but much bigger 22 mm OD 1mm width O-ring so frequency control knob is not so loose.
