Super Radio, great signal reports
|
Time owned: 6 to 12 months

Great little Radio and very senstitive. Great signal reports and it was only running at 25 watts and hit New Zeland. I just hope I can find another 757 just like her. No super thrills and 20 years old, no DSP and you have to just use some skill to pull in the weak ones. Will never get rid of it.

Nice radio
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I bought this radio new in 1983 and it stayed in its unopened box until September 2010 when I got my General. Time now to bring it out and hook it up. So far it works, does what it should do.
I like all the knobs and buttons, no menus on this rig hi hi.
I like that if the SWR is to high it shuts down and won't transmit.
I don't like the fwd/reverse power switch is on the back of the radio.
I don't like the loud fan.
Being new to HF this radio does what I need and expect it to do. After spending almost 28 years in its box I hope it will operate for 28 years on my bench.

Nice Solid Radio

I bought one of these new in the 80's and used it in all kinds of abusive conditions, high heat, mobile, portable, dirt and fine sand, high humidity etc etc. I even accidentally dropped it from about three feet! It worked flawlessly and never let me down. I sold it about two years ago when I got into buying and selling ham gear. I have used just about every rig out there and I am convinced that for the price these rigs are selling for used they are an absolute bargain if you can find a clean one in good working condition. This rig was ahead of its time in performance. I recently acquired another one and will keep it forever. The receiver isn't quite as good as my K2, but I can still hear the same signals.

Like others here, this rig was my first HF rig and was used for about 12 months without any problems, but I dreamed about the next rig that would receive better, have better TX and have all the DSP and gadgets that would allow me to RX things the FT 757 wouldn't (so I thought). So I got a Kenwood TS 870 and it was indeed a great rig. Anyway one day the TS 870 RX blew and it went in for service, so back to the FT 757 for a while.
First thing I noticed was the receiver was very lively, compared to the TS 870, perhaps some would call it noisy, but I was hearing local ground wave stations just was well as I did with the 870. The shift /width control was also very effective and had a nice analog feel of complete linear control. The analog meter was also a nice change. The NB appeared to be better than on the 870. When I was TXing (using some basic external audio gear setup for 200 - 2800khz with 2-2.4khz emphasis) a couple of my friends thought I had my TS 870 back from service ! They said it sounded great !
So to sum up, very sensitive receiver, easy to use and it really does keep up with the big boys.
On the negative side, they are getting older now and the electronics inside is very 80s with lots of components and boards, so things can go wrong, and indeed mine currently has a small issue with a bad relay. Also the VFO dosn't have a very nice feel, maybe its just mine but it isn't smooth and feels too light. I'de also have to say the frequency display only going to the nearest 10hz is a drawback, and the stock mics are very poor. I'de take half a mark off for those small things, but since I can't, I'll give it a full 5, otherwise I'de say 4.5/5 !

fair radio

my first impression of this radio was that it was small. I'm used to much bigger hf sets but this thing was small in comparison. I nicknamed it "dinky". I name all my radios as I have no life. :) however when I turned it on i was not impressed by the audio quality but your ears soon adjust. however i was impressed with how easy it is to operate. I have a shelf of hf radios, some with auto atus but when logging on hf I mostly reach for dinky. An external speaker should remedy the audio problems. overall i have fallen in love with this little radio, It's convenient, small and does what it says on the tin.

Great old radio
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
Hi,
Bought my 757 in Jan 1986 and it is still going strong today! It has never failed me. Likewise my FP757HD power supply. I still get great audio reports and it is super sensitive. It has had a rough life being used in the bush and mobile as well.

Great old transceiver
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Bought the old lady from the original owner who said it had been sitting in a box in his garage for about 6 years. When I received it the memory battery was dead (he told me it was) and the meter lamps were burned out. I replaced the lamps and the battery (not too difficult) and cleaned it up a bit and tried the old gal out.
Didn't take me long to find out that this old girl is one great old rig. She's sitting next to a Pro III, and believe whatever you want to, she hears better than the ProIII does.
No bells, no whistles, but a little playing with the RF gain, and the shift and width controls, and you can pull out the weakest ones!
Audio reports are great and folks cannot believe that I'm running a 757gx barefoot.
In 34 days that I've had it on the air I've worked 93 seperate countries including VK, ZL, ZK, etc from west Tennessee. All running barefoot. My antenna is a T-8 Log periodic.

AWESOME OLD RIG!
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
|
I just purchased mine from a friend of mine who's father in law just became a SK. When I first got it, I only had a 10 meter dipole since I had just upgraded to a General. Made several contacts with it on 10 meters with great reports. Took it over to a friends house and hooked it up to his antennas, and OMG does this rig talk! I only paid $300 for it, and let me tell you, the best 300 bucks that I have ever spent! I am still waiting for a good auto tuner to come up on ebay and a desk mic. I have to say that I am very impressed with this rig, and I love it! If your looking for an inexpensive rig that talks, I highly recommend! There is a switch behind the face plate, and when you flip it, if you can hear it you can talk to them! 10 meters to 160 meters including WARC. KILLER OLD RIG!
