Works great, but...

I just passed Technician and General on Tuesday 11/23/09 after using Hamtestonline for about 3 weeks. Prior to that I had been through two ARRL books for tech, and two years ago was signed up for the expensive ($74) arrl course for technician, but I got mobilized with the Army and never finished. The point I am making is for a rather small investment in time, money and effort, compared to my previous efforts, Hamtestonline got me through very quickly.
Now for the but...
I do recommend getting the ARRL books and reading them along with using Hamtestonline. Basically what Hamtestonline does is grill you on the question pool over and over until you literally memorize the answers. With the difficult math ones I did not have to learn all the formulas and I was the only one at the testing site without a calculator because I "just knew" the answers from answering the questions so many times prior. Yes, that got me to pass easily but it also in my opinion dumbs down the experience of learning the material which is why I recommend reading the books along using the program. I guess that is what is referred to as "adaptive learning" but to me it is just "Rote memorization" without learning the theory behind it. The program gives you a little didactic content to learn and read through, but not much.

I passed the three exams on the first try!!! (Different dates)Sure you have to spend time studying for the exams but with this software you maximize the use of your time. I was even answering practice questions when watching TV.... The VE that gave me the test said I was the fastest guy ever to finish the extra test (got a 90) and I breeze through it. He remembered me from doing the same in the previous Gen. test. You wont regret it if you invest the time.

Passed Tech and General
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Hi,
Ham Test On-Line is a very intuitive and informational training program for learning the material necessary to pass the tech, general and extra class licenses. I spent just over 10 hours on the website, studying for tech and general. I passed both test with flying colors on 10-17-09. With the 2 year subscription price for full access to the website, I should be able to pass the extra class test as easily as I did the tech and general within a few months. Thanks K1RV and W1AI for a great learning tool. 73!

An excellent product

I'm getting ready to retire from my high-tech career, and looking forward to lots of free time to enjoy ham radio
To upgrade from General to Extra Class, I studied with Ham Test On-Line, fully learning each subject, and then took several Practice Exams to ensure I was ready.
Today, I took the Extra Class test and "aced it" : 50 out of 50 correct.
Couldn't have done this without Ham Test On-Line.
The investment in time and money is small, with an excellent Return On Investment, to get access to the "extra" 400 KHz of additional frequencies:
- 100KHz of CW
and
- 300 KHz of SSB
Thank you for creating a terrific product !

Superb preparation for tests

I used Ham Test Online to help prepare for the tests; I took all three in one sitting and scored 35/35, 35/35, and 48/50. I have a bit of a technical background and had a technician class license very, very long ago as a junior high school student. Therefore, I was not COMPLETELY new to ham radio and key concepts. Nevertheless, the Ham Test Online separates what you know from what you don't and drills you until you nail each element. If you pass the practice tests you will almost certainly pass the real thing. My recommendation is to augment the online training with the ARRL test guides for explanations of concepts where you might be weak--it really helps if you have at least some understanding of the underlying principles. Good luck!

I used Ham Test On-Line to pass both Technician and General. I am now working on my Extra Class ticket. With Gordo's books, CD's and Ham Test On-Line I have been successful on my exams and learned a great deal in the process.

I was a no-code tech for twenty years and wanted to upgrade but never did because of the Morse requirement. I found out a week beforehand that the G/E tests were going to be given locally, so I enrolled in the course. I had never seen the new material and used no other study aids. After seven days I aced the General and passed the Extra although I had not completed that portion of the course. I believe these results are typical.

excellent study method!

Excellent study method! I was having senior citizen problems grasping the General test material out of a book. A ham friend recommended this study route to me. I enrolled and within 21 hours of random study I was easily passing their practice exams with no problems and scored high on my General test itself.

I took the Extra class exam two weeks ago and only missed one out of 50 questions. Great way to study for your ham license or upgrade.

A Great Way to Prepare
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

I too think this adaptive learning system is about the best way to prepare for an exam. I passed the Extra exam using only HamTestOnline.com.
I think that how you use the website is important. Especially with the Extra exam, I think it is important to study only one topic at a time. What I would do is turn on the first one and use the "Study" function to get to about 100%. I then turned it off, and turned on the second one, and got to 100%. After that, I turned on both of them and did a study review. I used this method of learning one at a time, but when each one was mastered I would drill on all the areas I had mastered.
Also, there is a parameter that you can set which helps to determine how often missed questions are reshown to you. I set this to "3.0" and that seemed to work well for me.
