2 bad units  Time owned: more than 12 months
I just wrote the first review a couple of weeks ago but both the two new units I mentioned had some problems so I need to update. I got my server working again but the pactor connections would start and after about two minutes they would slow to 100 baud with no data flowing then it would sit for a minute with no data flowing and disconnect. I replaced everything to figure this problem out (radio, tnc, cabling, power supply, CIV interface, etc). I could not believe that two brand new KAM98 units could be bad but I did end up at that conlusion when a KAM Plus worked flawlessly.

I wrote to Kantronics and they sent this:
--------
The only thing that can cause that type of problem, is if the microprocessor clock frequency is out of adjustment inside the KAM98.

The frequency should measure 3.686400 MHz (+/- 150Hz) at test point H (pin 2 of IC U27). If adjustment is required, turn the trim cap at C57 (next to the microprocessor, the only trim cap inside the KAM98).
--------------

Well, they offered me to do it or send it in for repair. As I am out of the country I got out my frequency counter and found both units were way out of spec (over 400 hz off). This is pretty bad to have two brand new units, not even close in serial number to be out of spec. Did I mention in my first review any problems with quality? Yes, I think I did.

If you are having the connection problem with a KAM98 this is the magical fix as they both work great now!

I would have rated it this time as a "0" but I am thankful they emailed me the self-help fix the next day saving me from mailing them back to them.

Jeff
