Amazing HRD V5.0 beta
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
|
This evening I connected my 706MkIIG to my West Mtn Radio Plug&Play USB interface and fired up Simon's latest version of HRD. I had not used this setup previously. I am flabbergasted at the power of HRD. In one *free* package, I have just about everything a ham could ask for. I can fully manipulate my rig, watch for DX spots, send/receive with every mode possible. I now get to try Olivia, and all the other digital forms of communication and all from one software interface and a few cables between my PC and my rig. Sure, there are some better programs that provide some of the functionality HRD does, but none to my knowledge that provide so much for free. Simon is a great Ham - giving back to the hobby 10 fold over any benefit he derives. This is one piece of software that has a 'donate' button that I will use .. and use more than once! Good stuff OMs.. check it out! 73 //dj

Fantastic software

Lately I have installed HRD on several computers,
and it takes about 10-15 min to get it installed and have it up and run with DM-780. Very easy to configure, and you don't have to open HRD to work
DM-780, because it has it,s own exe. If you can find a mode DM-780 can't work, I am sure it's not worth to try.

Doesn't work - Staying with MIXW For Now
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

HRD is, in a way, two programs: HRD for radio control and DM-780 for the important things- soundcard modes such as OLIVIA, MFSK16, PSK31. It allows computer control of many transceivers, and the operator can select the appearance of the radio controls on their monitor.
You have to (set up) and run HRD to get to DM-780, and a lot of setting up is required. Its almost as if the 'journey' (complicated set up and keystrokes) was more important than the 'destination' (actual communications).
I've heard the term 'monkeyware' used to describe software with excessive keystrokes, distractions and eye-candy used to describe apps that make a trained pavlovian monkey out of the user, and sorry to say, this one fits the monkeyware description.
One of my peeves was that the actual communications screens seemed to be secondary to the "fluff" screens and tabs, yes, there are ways to expand the comm screens but more keystrokes and buttons again.
Another of my peeves was although my MIXW and five other soundcard programs worked well on my computers every time, HRD/DM780 did not produce enough output audio for the transmitter. All possible settings were tried.
The public safety, EOC, MARS, military and other 'serious' communications I am involved in require simpler, more reliable and repeatable results so I'm sticking with MIXW and AIRMAIL for soundcard and email apps.
Good Luck

Poor man's Flex-radio! I have been using it with my TS-480 for a couple of years. Never thought I'd become a mouse chaser. I only use the radio's controls when on CW.
So far as logging? Well, I can still write with a pen and I could care less if LOTW works with it or not.
Great program!

Love the Software

I give this FREE software program a five because it works!! I have used it for my daily stuff and it was actually quite easy to get used to.
I don't use it at the present because it lacks one thing that I require. I need FSK!! It is a great program without it but not usable for FSK. I will check in from time to time but without FSK, I can't use it!! Thank You Simon, excellent product if you don't use FSK!! Jake AA1E

Converted me from Linux

>it will need LOTW support before I convert.
FYI, someone has written a small utility which will watch your HRD Logbook for new entries and automatically upload new ones to LOTW, as well as download new LOTW confirmations and update your logs.
All the data fields, reports, queries, and displays for LOTW info are already in the HRD 5 logbook and ready to go.
The new logbook in HRD 5 is fully a real database, and is multi-user, multi-applications safe.

Cool Stuff

I've used this program on and off for three years and it's a lot of fun. I'm on V5.0 beta. For SWLing it's nice to surf bands and work the band scope. Frequency memory management is nice.
About the only nitpick I have is the overkill of customizing/config options.
The DM780 program is very cool and I'm also evaluating the logging program but it will need LOTW support before I convert.

Wonderful Software

I use version 5 with my ft920 and ft950 - works well with both - the new logbook is superb - adjusting parameters on either rig very easy to do - does this software have bugs? yes, all software has bugs - are the bugs obvious? every now and then a bug becomes obvious - Simon has updates which address issues that pop up - for free this software is better than software I've seen over the years that had a cost - Simon, thank you, you've really made a contribution -

An amazing piece of software, and as I learn how to use more features it just gets better. What a kick to see digital control of my 20 year old transceivers.
However, it's Simon's fault Windows 7 breaks it (Alert Microsoft! This has NEVER happened with ANY other applications!), it's Simon's fault QRZ keeps changing its links, it's Simon's fault Beta versions are not perfect, it's Simon's fault that eBay USB cables are unreliable, and by that logic, it is Simon's fault that when I can't find my reading glasses the screen fonts are too hard to read.
At a cost of *Free*, we hams are sure a hard bunch to please.
