Pleasure to Use  Time owned: more than 12 months
Purchased this software in the '90s and still use it off and on. Works great with my Kam+ and never had a system lockup due to software. Very very good support.

I also have KAWin and switch between the two depending on situation or mood. Happy customer.

Excellent general use KAM software  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have been using PACTerm 98 for the past few years and I have to say, that for ease of installation, operation, and support that this is one of the best products around. To install this product and get it on the air all you need to know is what serial port you will be using and where is your CD for call sign look up. It is a windows program so it operates just like all your other Microsoft programs and the developer has automated most of the tasks. If you would like a new feature added just send it in as a suggestion and CSS will look at it, they usually will work with you on it.
And speaking of CSS they are a very customer (Ham) orientated company and if you have a problem they will help get it fixed even if its a heaven forbid, a operator problem.

OK Software for the KAM98  Time owned: more than 12 months
I bought Pacterm98 a couple of years ago and upgraded it to ver 1.4. for use with my Kantronics KAM98.

First, let me say that the technical support from CSS is outstanding. My startup problems were immediately addressed by Rick Ruhl himself. Rick is W4PC and the President of CSS.

Pacterm98 has been designed (for better or worse) using Microsoft's Windows design guidelines. Most everything that you need to access is somewhere on the menus. More frequently accessed items can be found on the tool bar. If all of that fails there is a readily accessed command window for keying in control commands by hand.

I'm not a Microsoft fan and I found the user interface not to be as intuitive as I would have liked. However, It can be learned quickly by the average Microsoft Windows user who understands the KAM98's functions and features.

One of the Microsoft Window's design-guideline artifacts is the transmit on (CR) control. In my case, I use (CR)'s to start a new line and end a paragraph. Rick says that he will address this issue in future releases. In ver 1.4 a soft (CR) can be entered by pressing (CRTL-ENTER) to achieve the desired result. I would have personally preferred soft keys echoing Kantronics (CTRL-E) for the End-of-File/End-of Message marker and the (CTRL-T) for transmit and not have assigned (CR) to the transmit function. Rick points out that (CTRL-E) and (CTRL-T) have been reserved by Microsoft in the guidelines for other uses. I will not be relearning to type anytime soon and unfortunately for me, this characteristic is a fatal flaw. I will have to wait until an upgrade solves this problem before I can make use the software.

A missing feature is a user programmable tool bar. Pacterm98 has user macros which create text in the transmit buffer window which can be used to assemble QTH, WX data and include call signs, time of day, etc. They cannot include KAM98 control codes. A user programmable tool bar would be a great addition. It could be used to insert (CTRL-E) type characters, automate PBBS controls and in general permit the user to customize and automate direct control of any aspect of the KAM98's functions to suit his/her personal operating habits.

The $80 price seemed a bit stiff, but you get what you pay for. Pacter98 is a good piece of bug-free software with excellent documentation accompanied by outstanding and in-depth technical support from CSS.
