Good for mobile

I like FT-7800R, because I can use cheap 6 conductor telephone cable with RJ12 ( 6 pin version of RJ11 ) to make separation cable, and microphone plug into display units rather than main units like many other radio do.
receive air band, upto 512MHz , it has mini-DIN 6 connector for packet, etc.

Gud..but

Have had this rig for a few weeks now..got it new from HRO. I also have the Icom IC-208. I think the Icom has a little hotter RX...but not 90 bucks better! Would have been a "5"..but... On my Bird 43 and dummy load...the power is not as spec'ed.
I have the same lower power out that others have reported, and my Bird is not a mismatched antenna.
Would buy again.

Great Radio

I just purchased this radio and aside some of the reviews i seen about programming issues, deleting memories, saying the only way to program is by software, and a few others i have never seen a problem at all. Those that are having those issues either got a radio that was bad or they dont have the patients to read. They just expect the radio to just be what they want at the snap of their fingers and that dont happen. Everything on my radio works great and it is no different to me than any other radio. I programmed about 50 frequencies, labeled their names, and put them into their specified banks manually by hand all within 45 minutes. To me i wouldnt was the money for the software. I have about 200 more frequencies to go to set into the radio and i will be complete. I will have those all done in a couple hours. Yeah, software may be faster but to me its not worth it. Overall, the radio is fantatic and i only glanced at the book about 5 minutes tops and dont even use the book anymore.

Great little rig

This rig has a nice small form factor to fit in areas that other rigs just won't fit into. The sound quality is good on both ends, very easy to program. I was going to get some programming software and program it that way, but since I only have 12 repeaters that I have on my other radios, it took be about 30 minutes to program all of them (including the alpha tags)

Good radio for a new HAM

I recently bought the 7800 as my first radio. I currently have it set up as a base station using a MFJ-1754 dual band antenna @ 30 ft.
As a novice HAM with a technical background I had no problems learning to program it. This week I purchased the FTB7800 software from www.g4hfq.co.uk and a programming cable. This was not necessary, however it does make programming much quicker and allows you to back up the memory.
Overall the radio feels solid and I have no complaints. I would recommend this radio to other new HAMs as a first radio.

Great deal

Got a deal last month on the ft-7800r. Placed it in my car and paired it with a diamond magmount until I get my trunk lip mount. I have no problem with rx or tx. I am looking at getting a second one for the shack. I must admit that it was a little confusing at first to use but have gotten used to it. Its a must have.

24 watts on UHF !! ?? !!

I buys two radio FT-7800 new on HRO which I used
on my two cars, connected dirrect to the battery
and with SWR 1.1 to 1.5 on UHF and never get the 40 watts on any of the two radios, I went back to the HRO store they toll me to e-mail Yaesu to get Technical help,the person who anwser refuse to help,blaming a miss macht antenna, aks them a second time for technical advice, to only get the address to send it back to the factory, very bad service,they give me a good reson to go back to ICOM very good service, my next radio is going to be ICOM IC-208 55/50 watts

Bought mine from AES in Dec. 2008 on sale for $219. I am very pleased with this dualbander. 50 watts out on 2 meters and 40 watts out on 70 cm into a dummy load. It also has a GREAT receiver. This is my first Yaesu product in 35 years ( Ft-101). I think I will be looking at Yaesu HF line next. Joe ke9k

Great Value for the $$$

Got one from GigaParts, and as always Excellent service, and so far I am impressed. I usually don't rate anything for at least a year, but for this one I will. Very easy to use and program, My power output is a little low on 440, but 2 meter power output is at or above mfg specs. Receive is also very good. So far one of the Best experiences from Yaesu in Several Years. Was abt to give up on them. The last dual band radio was a Yaesu ft-5100 purchased in 1993 for $559.00 and this one was $229.00 big difference, and I did not ever use half of the features of the 5100 especially mobile. 73 enjoy Patrick kx5f

Best Dual Band To Have

Afrer months of searching reviews and trying to decide the best dual band to own, I settled with the 7800. Im so glad I chose this radio. It is by far the easiest radio I have used and owned. I really wanted to explore APRS with a Kenwood 710, but after talking to others and realizing APRS is really not that active in our area, I chose the 7800. It has the best abilities especially if there are not alot of UHF Freqs in your area, like mine, and you still want the best mobile to have, this is IT. The radio is easy to program on the fly or I chose the FTB7800 software as opposed to the ADMS which is terrible, and hard to use. I purchased a USB/Serial adaptor off ebay for around $4 and the software and computer recognized both with only one minor flaw and that was having to locate the driver which was easy from Microsoft, and installing it. Now that I have this radio, Im eager to purchase another to have at the house. If you dont have a need for crossband repeat, and the ablities of scanning 2 sides at once. Then this radio is the only way to go!!
