Beautiful Works

The UltraCurve DEQ2496 is dedicated for studio recording.
I buy DEQ2496 and I use in my Shack with my Equipment.
HeilSound GM4 -->VX2496 --Digi XLR AES-->DEQ2496 -->HomeMade Isolated Interface -->Icom Ic-756 ProIII
Very Beautiful with a good and Excellent modulation.
If you go on this site:
http://www.acehighdx.org
Now, only In the Italian section, You can see my isolated interface, especially:
http://www.acehighdx.org/zip_files/interfaccia_hq_audio_iw1qn.zip
Works very well and with little money you made an interface isolated like the IBox interface.

Useful Equilizer
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
The Behringer DEQ2496 is a great piece of audio equipment with a good range of capabilities that can be utilized by the ham in an external audio chain. This device is becoming very popular with hams that are using external audio equipment. The ULTRACURVE PRO DEQ2496 is an ultra high-precision digital 24-bit/96 kHz EQ/RTA mastering processor.
I was looking to run a mic that required phantom power so I picked up a Behringer preamp (MIC2200) and the DEQ2496. The DEQ can be found used from $160 to $200 and preamps can be found for $40 to $100. Then its up to you what mic you want to run, one that requires phantom power or not.
To learn how to setup the DEQ2496 I studied the manual for several weeks and then consulted with a professional sound engineer that also manufactures microphones Kelly Dueck of www.kelaudio.com. The DEQ has several functions that can be strung together, GEQ (graphic equalizer), PEQ (parametric equalizer), DEQ (digital equalizer), and DYN (compressor for speech processing and expander or noise gate).
The problem I see with application of the DEQ2496 for hams is that most are trying to use the DEQ which is difficult to setup and beyond the requirements of even ESSB operation. The DEQ function is for mastering and musical recording, it is not necessary for hams. Likewise the WIDTH function is not necessary again it is to master recordings giving them a concert hall effect. Ham’s should be using the GEQ a graphical equalizer that pretty much operates like slider controls for various frequencies and is very easy to configure. Another feature that is useful to hams’ is the DYN or compressor. Setting up the compressor is easy with the DEQ2496. Within the DYN menu is a graphical bar representation that rises to indicate volume level and another bar that drops down on peaks to visually show the signal compression, each is adjustable to the desired level.
The only functions within the DEQ2496 that are practically useful to the ham are the GEQ and DYN. For that it operates fine. If you want to use other more advanced functions then you will need to spend an inordinate amount of time adjusting the DEQ2496.
Additionally I was warned by Kelly not to overdrive these devices. All the signal processing (equilization, compression, etc.) takes place on a digital level after the A/D converter if the red overdrive light are coming on you end up with a big distorted mess within the digital processing, and very bad output.

Quality is not there
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months

Unit is very very poor quality.
As the saying goes: "You can't get something for nothing !"
Obviously quality of compoenents inside this units is its bigest flaw. When the unit worked it worked well, but I, like many other said "This is a great unit ! What are all these other idiots complaining about ?"
Well, 2 months later I found out. Unit is dead and I am struggling to get it replaced under waranty.
Please look elsewhere for longevity.

Best Digital EQ... period... End of story !
|
Time owned: more than 12 months

### from the previous reviewer.
"The long and the short of it.
Save you money and trouble get an W2IHY 8 band EQ
### IMO, the IHY boxes (both of em) leave a lot to be desired. Just feed a function gen into em... then measure the gawd awfull THD/IMD on a HP distortion analyzer.
and a Good 600 ohm Mic.
### Nobody uses 600 ohm mics. Studio/broadcast mics are all 50-150 ohms. These days, we are after max V transfer... Not max pwr transfer.... hence the mismatched Z's between rack gear. Output Z's are always low... input z's, are always high.
It might cost you a little more but, it's very user friendly.
## It should be. How much simpler can u get... with only 8 sliders to fool with.
Unlike Behinger, Mr. Jones Will call you back. He Will give you instant service. He Will work with you.
### to do what??? Tell u how to plug it in ?? If one reads the excellent IHY manual's.... and still can't figure it out..... you have no business owning ouboard audio gear.
The manual? You need to dig, dig, dig to get information; a set up example would be nice ~ not having to go to some audio guru's web site for answers and try to sound like him....
### NU9N's site is excellent. 90% of the time.... one person's EQ settings will never work for someone else.... UNLESS, you both have similar voices... same mic.. same xcvr.
Those that do well with audio outboard EQ stuff have music or audio background experience.
### Nonsense..... we all just re-read the manual.... it's up to the end user to tweak, and tweak... till he gets the desired sound.
#### The DEQ-2496 is superb... the best Digital EQ out there... and a steal at $249.00. The 24 bit, 96 khz sample rate audio.. is cleaner than ur 16 bit, 44.1 khz CD's inyour living room. It also comes with a RTA... which can be used PRE- or post EQ... use IT. Look at the raw audio going into the RTA... then you have a reference point to start tweaking. Then toggle pre/post EQ. The RTA can also be used on RX.
Additionally, they most likly have pulled a filter and added a wider one; butchering a nice radio.
### I simply plugged in a PAIR of 6 khz INRAD filters into BOTH of my new 1000-MP-MK-V xcvr's. Inrad # 710-B.... + 707-C.
### The 2496 can be used to chop off the audio to any upper freq.. restricting BW... like 3 khz... 3.5 khz.... 4 khz... 5 khz etc. We do this by double stacking the parametric filters. The latest software ver also has hp/lp filters.
### Download the manual from Behringer's site.
ALL the MK-V ESSB mods will soon be on the WZ5Q.com website. ... stay tuned.
later... Jim VE7RF

Not reliable
|
Time owned: more than 12 months
|
I own two of these units. The first broke around 6-9 months of use, the second is breaking now, about 15 months after purchasing new.
When they work, these are very good units. Lots of usable features and fairly intuitive to program once you get the hang of it. But after having two out of two go bad, I have to conclude these units have long term problems and therefore they are junk if reliability is an issue. The first unit developed an intermittent sound loss. The second unit shuts down after getting warm and goes into limp or by-pass mode. Both are permanent installations (non-mobile) in non-smoking, conditioned (AC and heat) equipment rooms; firmware on both is 1.2B. My old & featureless Rane gear has never given me an ounce of trouble--I'm going 100% Rane for EQs.

for serious audio a great box
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
I retired my mdx1400, dsp1100p, dsp1400p and run the deq2496.
I echo all the positive aspects of this unit..
you ask why a 4?
well:
out of the box you have version 1.2B they currently have two upgrades 1.3 and 1.4
the upgrades do have a few features we can use but downloading can be tough if you don't have the proper midi cable and software.
I'm using the version out of the box 1.2B I can live without the few features added we can utilize. [for now]
There are a few design limits and some module confusion but after the learning curve you'll find it somewhat friendly. Yeah the manual is good but still a little rough and could have more information.
I daisy chain the left and right channels so I can run the downward expander and compressor. you can run one or the other per channel not both.
If Behringer included a mic pre and 48v then the DEQ2496 would truly be a complete box!
I now run a smooth audio a B-5 mic, dsp110 shark for mic preamp and phantom voltage, then the DEQ2496 into the mixer etc. my recording and phone patch routing have not changed.
The DEQ2496 has amazing displays that may intimidate at first, but for example, to view the DSP1100P filters you do a three finger push button dance...with the DEQ2496 you pull up a page and there in full detail are your settings.
If you're a seasoned audiophile this is the next generation box for you!
If you are new into this mode many DSP1100P and DSP1124P may be offered very cheaply and other boxes too...making your entry very affordable!
Or, you too can jump into this box but be aware it can frustrate the novice audiophile.
This box is a keeper!!!

Good Job Behringer
|
Time owned: 3 to 6 months
|
Have owned the DEQ-2496 for a few months now, man what a machine.
As in the previous review... good bye rack....hello 2496.
All you need is a Heil Goldline Pro, a mic pre-amp, DEQ-2496, a mixer (for headroom and the side chain stuff) and an Ibox (from W2IHY)plug it into the rig and your ready to go.
The machine has 6 boxes in one one box.
I use this setup with the 756Proll (fed into the rear), the Jupiter (fed into the rear) has all tube type (Behringer naturally) sound reinforcement stuff on it.
For less than $290.00 you cant go wrong.
By the way, seek help from an experienced audiophile for setup. This unit is not plug and play.
I hope to put basic DEQ-2496 setup insructions on the SSB-Audio website soon.
Have Fun

Convenient all-in-one box replacing individual audio rack items
|
Time owned: 0 to 3 months
|
Currently selling for $299.00 through most web site distributors (Musiciansfriend.com and ZZounds.com).
Using this box I was able to eliminate the Behringer 1124P Equalizer and MDX-2200 Composer Pro (compressor/limiter) in my audio rack. I am currently using an Electrovoice RE-20 and Goldline Pro mic via a Behringer 602A mic-preamp/mixer into the DEQ2496 and from there via a W2IHY IBox isolation transformer into either my TS-950SDX or TS-870S.
For the relatively low price this box really offers a wide range of functionality that I can't get from the individual boxes I had been using. Here is a quick summary of what you get:
- Ultra high-resolution processor for all EQ, RTA and dynamic applications.
- 4 consurrently selectable EQ modules (31-band graphic EQ, 10-band parametric EQ, plus three Dynamic EQs that you find in the 1124P).
- Flexible Compressor/Expander functions with Peak Limiting.
- A built-in Pink Noise generator for EQ filter setup and alignment (really neat!).
- Unique Virtual Paragraphic EQ that allows parameteric control of graphic EQs.
- Ultra high-resolution 61 band real-time FFT Analyzer.
- Multi-functional level meters (peak/RMS, VU, and SPL meter.
- 64 user memories for complete setups and/or individual module configurations.
- Separate RTA (Real Time Analysis) mic/line input with selectable phantom power.
- Open architecture allows future software updates via MIDI download from Behringer web site.
- Employs two high performance 32/40-bit floating-point SHARC digital signal processor for ultimate sonic resolution.
The user's manual, while relatively short for such a powerful piece of equipment, gives you a full description of all the controls and enought information to set up a set of filters to your own liking and get you started.
You can download and review the user's manual at www.behringer.com.
After 3 months I will come back and give you a more complete evaluation of the unit and describe my experience using it.
