Excellent Rig  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have owned and used my IC-735 since 1992. I bought it used from AES- Orlando. I love this rig, for desk top, portable or mobile operation. It is rock solid in RX and TX. I purchased the auto keyer and filter for it, installed it and it works reliably. I highly recommend this rig to anyone. Con; The little clear door over the controls does not close properly but I ignore it. It drives my Ameritron AL-80A with no problem. I like Kenwood products for their TX audio quality but I like the RX quality of the ICOM. Purchase with confidence and have fun DXing.
Regards,
Tony W2AJT

Built to Last  Time owned: more than 12 months
I have now owned my IC-735 for almost 24 years. It has been used in 6 different countries, in and out of mobile setups and spent 1.5 years in a 30' sailboat on the Australian east coast. In all that time I have only had to replace one switch (due to salt water ingress), one internal fuse (same problem) and re-tune the PL section (just recently). It still performs flawlessly and I use it about 10 hours per week. Coupled with a W9GR DSP III it has been a superb CW rig over the years.

Hard to complain  Time owned: more than 12 months
This rig is really a keeper. My warning would be watch out for the RCA jumper between RX/TX on the back. It's easy to break the RCA from the board as there is no strain relief.

I get compliments all the time on the audio with the stock hand held mic. I used to think the filtering was substandard until I went to HRO and played with a 7800 which of course is better but not $7K better.

If you have a chance to get one by all means do. No internal PS so a nice mobile rig although not small and it does vent heat at the top.

Great radio  Time owned: 3 to 6 months
Have been using this IC-735 for five months now. It's hooked to a G5RV dipole about 35 feet off the ground. It's easy to operate, and I've gotten 5/9 reports from the Ukraine to Chile, operating from Mississippi. For a $300 radio picked up at a hamfest,I'm really pleased. I doubt there's another 30 year old unit out there that could hold up to this model.

Great Radio  Time owned: more than 12 months
Owned my IC735 for 4 years & was very happy with it. Great receive & very good selectivity.
As with most radios that get old they need maintenance which I do not have time for. But if you can get a good one I recommend it.

Nice little radio  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I've owned a number of back-up radios to my FT1000MP MKV Field over the last few years, and have regretted selling some of them. A couple of months ago, I went looking again, and found a 735 with matching power supply and the Icom AT150 automatic tuner for a very good price. When they arrived, they looked like new. Everything was there including the little door on the 735.
I'm quite impressed with the 735. It's receiver is very good, and using the stock hand held mike, I get good reports on my audio. I don't find the noise blanker all that good, but at my location, most noise blankers are useless (50KVA lines nearby). The controls behind the door and the switch at the back for the meter are inconvienient for sure, but they're set and forget, so once setup, they don't get used to often. The front panel layout is fine, and although the knobs are small, one mustn't forget, this is a small radio. It hears most signals the Yaesu does, and does it quite well. The Yaesu of course has a lot more QRM fighting features, but the little 735 holds it's own.
With the matching power supply and the AT150 tuner, it's a nice package that has no hidden menus that many of the newer rigs have.
I would recommend this radio to anyone looking for a backup rig and or a mobile or portable rig.
At the price they are going for now ($300-$400)they're a darn good main rig too.

Excellent oldie but goodie  Time owned: 0 to 3 months
I bought one of these 2 months ago and have come to really appreciate it's design. I had seen them many years earlier but I remember being put off by the door and the slide switches inside. After using it for awhile I don't mind that aspect as much as I thought.
The receiver is very good. As others have said the audio quality is excellent with no listener fatigue and it seems plenty sensitive enough with a preamp to add gain if needed. I rarely use the preamp below 20 meters. It is easy to get around from band to band with the tuning step buttons. I do wish that this rig had more than 12 memories but that is a small criticism. The memory system is very easy to use.
Features include an adjustable noise blanker that actually works, PBT, notch, and speech compressor. I have received many unsolicited comments on the transmit audio which is also adjustable with another control that can add treble or bass.
The 735 is a compact size that weighs about 11 lbs. I added a carrying handle to one side and now I can tote it with one hand. It will also be used in my car as a temporary mobile rig.
I wish that the meter function switch could have been put on the front panel somewhere. It is necessary to reach in back and switch the meter to Power Out or SWR depending on what you want. The middle position of the slide switch is for setting the meter sensitivity before reading SWR. I got around this by leaving the meter set for PO and having a separate SWR/Power meter that is used for tuning up and monitoring SWR.
The 735 has relay and ALC jacks on the rear panel so the intended interfacing with an Ameritron ALS-600S amp will be easy.
I have also enjoyed using this transceiver as a shortwave receiver. Program listening is very good using a couple of speakers on each side. The 6 kHz AM filter seems adequate. You can also switch in the 2.3 kHz SSB filter on AM for more selectivity if needed. Modding this rig is comparatively easy because there are no SMD type components to worry about. I did the mod to transmit on 60 meters with the easy snipping of two diode leads.
For me this transceiver is a great solution to amateur radio operating at home and in the car along with listening to the shortwave bands. For it's price in the $300-350 range I believe it is an excellent value.

What good HF mini base station  Time owned: more than 12 months
I bought a second hand quit old but very good condition 735 to use as my spare HF radio as the price was good. This radio is what I call a mini base station but it has every thing needed to work DX. The radio works very well with good recieve. In cobination with a small 280 W linear I have worked lots of DX world wide from my HQ just south of Johannesburg city South Africa. The radio also has a small speach prosesor which works quit well and lifts the TX audio a little bit.
